Today is a very special day for the Global LT community as we celebrate the late birthday of our founder, Hortensia. Her legacy and contribution to the world is immeasurable. Born in Cuba, she immigrated to the United States with her family in the early 1960s. She worked to support her family by teaching Spanish to non-native speakers, eventually starting her own language training company with only a phone and a filing cabinet. More than four decades later, our company has grown into a leading global provider of language and intercultural training and translation and interpretation services, serving multinational businesses worldwide. We honor her legacy every day by continuing the work she was so passionate about. Moving internationally can be life changing. You're exposed to new languages, new cultures, and new surroundings. How you prepare for that change can make all the difference in your ability to adapt. Our Cultural Program Manager, Marina Rowe, is an expat herself, having moved from Russia to Austria to the UK (and several other places in between). She knows first-hand how difficult it can be to integrate into new surroundings if you don't have the proper language or intercultural training. In our latest blog, Marina shares her personal experiences as well as tips for navigating life as an expat. Shanah tovah umtukah! Rosh Hashanah translates from Hebrew to mean "the head of the year". This 2-day celebration signifies the start of the Jewish New Year and is filled with traditions. #RoshHashanah marks the beginning of the Days of Awe, which are 10 days of introspection and repentance that lead into Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement and most sacred holiday for Jewish people. Some traditional foods include: -Apples and honey eaten together represent a sweet new year -Challah, a braided bread, in a round loaf to represent a cycle of the year -Pomegranate seeds, representing the 613 mitzvot, or commandments, that are cited in the Torah, the Jewish holy book

Learning a language is both rewarding and challenging. English can be difficult for non-native speakers because of the nuances involved. The sentence, "I never said she stole my money", has 7 different meanings depending on the stressed word. Give it a try! #languagelearning #englishlanguage

Time for another #FunFactFriday! In many cultures, children are told to keep their baby teeth under their pillow and the Tooth Fairy will give them money in exchange for their teeth. But Greek children are told to toss their tooth onto their roofs. This cultural tradition is meant for the child to have a healthy tooth as well as good luck for the family. #culture #culturaltradition

In 2021, one of the world's biggest Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) firms - and one of our biggest clients - was getting ready to transition a major Japanese corporation's accounting operations to the Philippines. They needed their Filipino accountants to learn to speak, read, and write Japanese. According to the U.S. Department of Foreign Service Institute (FSI), to reach "general professional proficiency" in Japanese it takes 88 weeks (about 20 months) or 2,200 class hours. We only had 9 months to make that happen. Read the incredible story about how we delivered on that deadline here: https://lnkd.in/gQqcKnFp #languagelearning #Japanese #BPO

There's nothing quite like the atmosphere of the airport - different people from all walks of life going in every direction as they're just getting off a flight or about to board one. But what happens if a flight is delayed or canceled and some of those people don't speak the local language? Chaos. Our Director of Program Design, Curriculum, and Instruction got to witness this very thing happen during her recent travels. After 4 hours of sitting on the plane, the flight was eventually canceled, and #language barriers between passengers and employees only made the stressful situation worse. In our latest blog, our Director covers the impact of miscommunication, the benefits of investing in language and #interculturaltraining, and so much more. It's #FunFactFriday! German World Children's Day is the official children's day of #Germany, one of two children's days recognized in Germany every year. While two children's days are recognized in Germany, both days are celebrated but not by everyone. This day was first established in Germany in 1954 and is now celebrated around the world as a way to promote children's rights and well-being. It's a time to focus on the future of our world and recognize the importance of nurturing and supporting our youth.
