Helping sanctuaries help animals
About us
Many animal programs carry the mislabeled claim of “sanctuary” while offering something vastly different - a life in which animals are deprived of natural behaviors and a natural environment, and in which they are exploited for human use. The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) was formed in 2007 by nationally and globally recognized leaders in the animal protection field for the sole purpose of strengthening, supporting, and promoting the work of true animal sanctuaries worldwide. For GFAS, a sanctuary is a facility providing temporary or permanent safe haven to animals in need while meeting the principles of true sanctuaries. These principles include no commercial trade of animals, no captive breeding unless part of a bona fide breeding for release program, no invasive research, and no direct contact between wildlife and the public. GFAS’ primary work is our accreditation program. Today there are nearly 200 GFAS certified sanctuaries on five continents. These include sanctuaries that provide lifetime care to animals, rescue organizations that seek permanent adoptive homes for species such as equines, and rehabilitation centers that care for and prepare animals for a release back to the wild.

True sanctuaries don't exploit wildlife and rob them of their freedom for profit. GFAS evaluates public access, viewing, and tours as part of our sanctuary accreditation program. Sanctuaries and rescue centers that earn and maintain GFAS certification have engaged in a process that demonstrates their commitment to the welfare of the animals in their care and adherence to the principles of a true sanctuary, and their desire for improvement so they can continue to meet the animals' needs in the years to come. Earlier this year, we conducted a public survey to understand more about how sanctuaries create change. In reviewing the nearly 350 responses from individuals across the world, we learned how engagement with sanctuaries and rescue centers – whether through visiting, volunteering, or simply online through social media – inspired changes in attitudes and behavior. Many expressed a greater appreciation and understanding of animals, seeing them as individuals, and an understanding of how their behaviors could have a negative impact on animals. Some shared how they made changes to their diets and food choices, purchasing choices, or steps to support the environment. Some explained how they made career choices to help animals and engage in conservation activities. And many spoke of how engagement with sanctuaries changed them, inspiring compassion and empowering them to advocate and educate others. Have you been changed by your experience with sanctuaries? Let us know in a comment! #truesanctuary

Today is #GivingTuesday! Will you help us help animal sanctuaries? Your donation can help to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of animals in need by going towards travel expenses to visit and inspect over 70 animal sanctuaries and rescue facilities worldwide in the coming year. For example: $25 = Toll Charges to Drive to Inspect a Farmed Animal Sanctuary. $50 = Travel Visa Fee for a Site Visit to a Rehabilitation Center in Africa. $350 = Flight to a U.S. Equine Sanctuary Site Visit Location. https://lnkd.in/gz8qK3DS We are so grateful today and every day for your support of #truesanctuaries!
