Approximately 462 million children around the world do not have access to handwashing facilities at school, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Proper handwashing is crucial for school-aged children as it is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent the spread of diseases. By promoting proper handwashing practices, we can protect children from a range of illnesses, ensuring they remain healthy and able to attend school regularly. Through the U.S. Department of Agriculture-funded Unidos program in Guatemala, we have helped support water and sanitation infrastructure improvements such as school latrines, handwashing stations and sustainable water systems in order to ensure more children can stay healthy and in school.

We are incredibly disturbed by the escalation of violence in Lebanon amid the ongoing Israel-Palestinian War. This latest emergency will only deepen the suffering of communities made vulnerable by previous crises in Lebanon and the wider region. Thousands of families have been forced to flee their homes, seeking safe refuge, which compounds an already dire situation with nearly a year of cross-border attacks leaving hundreds of thousands displaced. We are currently assessing the situation and are planning a humanitarian response in the country. We have a robust presence in Lebanon through our partner, Vitas Lebanon, and as of today, all staff are accounted for. Our hearts go out to our colleagues as they navigate the pain and uncertainty ahead. While tensions continue to rise and the threat of a regional conflict looms, we continue our call for an immediate ceasefire.

We're excited to share an inspiring story about Musthaq and Charuka, two friends who have bridged cultural gaps through the USAID-funded Social Cohesion and Reconciliation Activity (SCORE). Following a decades-long armed conflict in Sri Lanka that ended in 2009, deep ethnic divisions between the Sinhalese majority and Tamil minority communities have persisted across the country, hindering the process of healing and unity.
