....But the global coffee industry generates more than $200 billion per year. Where does the remaining $3.96 from your cup of coffee go? It gets divvied up between shops, roasters and intermediaries. We’ve all got expenses to cover, but farmers are facing the costs of adapting to climate change alongside steep inflation--and the average coffee farmer’s income has not changed in the last two decades. There’s no doubt about it; farmers need higher prices. In 2023, the Fairtrade Minimum Price for coffee increased: 29% for Arabica beans and 19% for Robusta beans, plus a 33% increase to the organic differential. So what exactly is the Fairtrade Minimum Price? It is a crucial financial safety net for farmers when it comes to selling their goods and helps cover basic production costs to keep farms running. This safety net helps coffee farmers better adapt to the uncertain times we are living in, while leaving the door open for them to earn more when market prices are above the Fairtrade Minimum Price. This is an essential tool that coffee farmers must be allowed to leverage in order to find renewed stability in their profession. There's a long-standing myth that you have to choose between coffee that tastes good and coffee that does good. But the truth is, you don’t! ☕✨ Fairtrade coffee is produced with great skill, care and attention by award-winning farmers. It’s high-quality, great-tasting coffee with a vast array of flavour profiles. This coffee comes from cooperatives that unite farmers and their communities, offer technical support, and create sophisticated quality control systems to deliver amazing coffee to roasters and shoppers alike. 🌿🌍 We also have our Golden Cup competition, which brings together Fairtrade certified coffee cooperatives to have their specialty coffees scored across various categories like aroma, flavour, and acidity, as well as judged on their production quality. Look out for our winners announced later this year. 👀 By choosing Fairtrade coffee, you're helping build a fairer trade system, supporting sustainable livelihoods for farmers worldwide, and promoting cleaner, greener production methods. 🌱🤝 And what could taste better than that? 💚 #thefutureisfair #FairtradeCoffee #CoffeeLovers #DeliciousAndGood © Photo Nahún Rodríguez / Fairtrade

Right now smallholder coffee farmers are equivalently subsidizing the global coffee industry because they’re not receiving prices that consistently cover the cost of production (to say nothing of achieving a living income). Now, that’s not much of an incentive for the next generation to carry on the family business. And then there’s Fairtrade’s two-part pricing mechanism (our Fairtrade Minimum Price and our Fairtrade Premium)--a meaningful intervention towards economic sustainability. Women have long been involved in the cultivation of coffee--but planting their own coffee bushes? Making money from said coffee bushes? In Setek, Kenya, where Caroline Rono is a Fairtrade coffee farmer, local custom forbid it. Men owned the land. This meant that women farmers lacked access to their own incomes. It also meant that they were often ineligible to serve at governance levels of cooperative leadership. Which brings us to Fairtrade’s Women in Coffee program! Participants in this initiative (like Caroline!) own their coffee bushes. Accordingly, they receive direct payment for what they reap. They also are privy to trainings about improving both yield and quality of their coffee. More than 325 women have participated. And production of their coffee bushes? It’s doubled. 🖐️🎤 If you’re keen for more insight into the lives and labors of Fairtrade farmers and workers, be sure to follow us. And tell your co-workers! Now they have more freedom and money, by selling their own coffee.” Next to Caroline's name is an arrow that points to a portrait of her and then to an invitation to “Look for the Fairtrade Mark!” Text is followed by the blue, green and black Fairtrade Mark.
