geniant's own Kelly Moran discusses biases and data. Did you know there are three hidden biases that could cloud your judgment? Relying solely on memory might not be the best strategy for insightful analysis!
VP Experience Research & Insights @ geniant | Google Alum. Customer Experience and Design Research, Anthropology and Ethnographic Insights
Here's why you shouldn't rely on memory when analyzing research sessions. Every so often a particular piece of advice floats around for making research analysis easier. The advice is to skip things like listening to the interview recording, reading the transcript, or even having a dedicated note taker and instead just "trust your intuition" because "the things that stand out are the important things" and you'll remember them. There are reasons why it's not such a good idea to just focus on things that "stand out" in memory. These all roll up into the fact that the things your brain latches on to are not magical truths that you are intuitively drawn to. Instead they are things that fall into the following 3 biases: ⌛ Recency bias: The things you heard most recently, ie in your last interview 🥇 Primacy bias: The things you heard first, ie your first interview ✅ Confirmation bias: The things you hear that line up with what you already believe You're more likely to remember things in the first and last interviews, plus the ones with participants who said what you expected them to. The middle interviews and the one that don't support what you already think you know will not be as clear in memory. To do good research that mitigates these biases you need to *revisit your data* by reading all the notes your dedicated notetaker took and ideally reviewing the transcripts and/or listening to the recordings. I know it takes time, but that time is research. Without taking that time, you're not doing research.
