Futures education, futures literacy, and futures thinking are terms we use frequently in the foresight/futures studies bubble.  It's always useful to crack open the 'futurese' jargon and discuss what it means to meaningfully engage with futures. ⭐ Often framed as a professional activity essential for "planning", guiding "decision making" or orienting "strategies", futures studies could be more generously placed in the realm of humanities where, along other human capacities, imagination and anticipation should be nurtured and celebrated. 🌱 In this light, futures education is more like tending to a garden. Like doing the soil work that turns it into fertile ground for seeds to grow into flowers such as human creativity, a heightened awareness of the mechanisms of change, agency coupled with humbleness, a sense of taking part into shaping something yet non-existent. Navigating the Future: The Power of Tri-Scope Synthesis The Tri-Scope Synthesis is a framework developed by futurist and advisor of the Special Secretariat of Foresight of the Hellenic Republic, Dimitris Dimitriadis. It integrates three distinct ways of thinking: - critical thinking for unbiased analysis, - futures thinking for exploring potential scenarios, - exponential thinking to anticipate rapid technological and societal changes. This combination enables the creation of strategies that are innovative, adaptable, and sustainable. It also addresses the need for an advanced approach in today's fast-paced environment by incorporating comprehensive risk management, ethical considerations, and sustainability into the strategic planning process. What does the future hold for farmers and rural communities?    Digitalisation is set to significantly impact the lives of farmers and rural communities by 2040. The EU Policy Lab led a study to explore how digitalisation can strengthen the resilience of agriculture and rural communities, considering possible disruptive and transformative changes.    Last year, a science-for-policy report presented the findings of this study. It is intended for policy officials and analysts across government. The toolkit summarises what futures thinking is, how it can be used in policymaking and describes a series of tools that can be used by policymakers to manage in uncertainty and identify future actions. Identifying future critical technologies for space, defence and civil industries Last year, the Joint Research Centre EU Policy Lab conducted a technology foresight process through a series of participatory exercises. The objectives were: - to identify cross-sectoral emerging technologies relevant to space, defence, and civil industries that could be of strategic importance to the EU ; - to determine priority areas to reduce or prevent the development of new dependencies or the emergence of existing ones.  Participants focused on 4 future critical technologies: - Quantum communications and cryptography; - Space platform:providing critical in-orbit services and operations; - Integrated photonics; - Nuclear micro-reactors.
