Many thanks to Senior Consultant Olamide Ayoade-Alabi, PhD. for offering her perspective in recognition of World Mental Health Day. How does FTI Consulting support mental health? Ola: FTI Consulting offers a variety of leave options, including bereavement and special leave, which I have found invaluable for supporting my mental health. Also, the firm’s hybrid work structure allows us to prioritize mental well-being while still excelling in our roles. Personally, as someone living far from my home country and family, it’s essential for me to make time for social activities and relationships outside of work to maintain my mental health. Like many others, I face mental health challenges, so having this flexibility is crucial to staying balanced and thriving both personally and professionally. How can we become more comfortable talking about mental health in the workplace? Ola: A crucial aspect of this is teaching people how to truly listen without feeling the need to solve problems or offer advice. When we create an environment where active listening and validation are the norm, it becomes much easier to have honest, human-to-human conversations about how we’re really doing. The person sharing doesn’t feel like a burden, and the listener understands that their role is simply to listen and validate, not to fix things. This shift requires a cultural change, but it brings immense benefits for everyone involved. What do FTI’s Mental Health First Aiders do? Ola: It is a self-nominating process, meaning individuals can choose to seek help on their own. In addition, if someone believes a colleague may be experiencing a mental health crisis, they can request that the Mental Health First Aiders speak with them. Importantly, Mental Health First Aiders are not obligated to report anything unless they believe the person is in imminent danger of harming themselves or others. When you feel upset or stressed, how do you cope? Ola: Taking a break during a stressful time helps me manage it more effectively, as I feel I can tap into the more mature and rational parts of my mind when I’m well-rested. However, it’s not always possible to take that rest when stress hits. Right now, I’m working on cultivating self-compassion for inner strength, and I’m hopeful that this will help me handle stress more constructively, even when breaks aren’t possible. #WorldMentalHealthDay #MentalHeath #TeamFTI
