About us
One of two schools created in 1926 when the University of Miami was first founded, Frost is one of the largest and best music schools located in a private university in the U.S., and one of the most comprehensive and relevant in all of higher education. With over 700 students and 100 faculty members it is a top choice for instrumental, keyboard and vocal performance as well as composition, music business, music education, music engineering technology, music therapy, songwriting, jazz, studio music, and more. Although founded in 1926, the naming gift from Dr. Phillip and Patricia Frost in 2003 was a historic occasion. In 2014, the Frost School of Music launched its online academic division, Frost Online, and since its establishment, has continuously strived to promote and amplify the educational impact of the Frost School of Music by extending its academic offerings beyond the campus to students everywhere; furthering the school's unwavering commitment to enhancing the future of music in higher education through progressive innovation. The mission of the Frost School of Music is to foster musical leadership by providing an innovative, relevant, and inspiring education; advance performance, creativity and scholarship; and enrich the world community with meaningful outreach and brilliant cultural offerings. The Frost School has pioneered new curricula and was the first in the nation to offer professionally accredited Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music Business and Music Engineering Technology, and was among the first to offer degrees in Music Therapy, as well as Studio Music and Jazz. Renowned for its Instrumental Performance programs, it is the home of the Frost Chamber Orchestra, Frost Symphony Orchestra, and Frost Concert Jazz Band and is a leader in vocal training with the Frost Opera Theater, Frost Chorale and other notable choirs. The Frost School of Music's Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra has performed at major events nationwide this year, contributing significantly to the celebration of Henry Mancini's centennial. The impact of "Henry Mancini at 100" concerts, including his iconic film and television scores, was presented at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, last month. Held on September 28, this concert was the grand finale of a month-long festival honoring the composer's legacy in the very institution that houses his complete archive—spanning the length of a football field—within the nation's cultural and historical records.

To make it even more special, the album was produced by Studio Music and Jazz professor and renowned trumpeter Brian Lynch.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Professor Robert Carnochan, whose passion for music education and conducting left a lasting mark on students and colleagues. Since joining the Frost School of Music in 2015, Carnochan served as Chair of Instrumental Performance, Director of Bands, and Music Director/Conductor of the Frost Wind Ensemble. Last month, his peers honored him with the Phillip Frost Award for Excellence in Teaching and Scholarship—our institution's highest recognition for outstanding faculty and leadership. “Rob Carnochan was a peerless conductor and musical artist, and an inspirational leader to every student and colleague he touched,” said Dean Shelton G. “Shelly” Berg. “We have lost a giant in the wind band world.” His dedication to music and commitment to nurturing future generations of musicians will forever be remembered. We extend our deepest sympathies to Carnochan's family, friends, and the many students and colleagues who were fortunate to have known him. We honor his life and legacy in today’s Frost News.
