According to this article in The Atlantic, the idea behind #neurocosmetics is that better, healthier-looking #skin will lead to better, healthier brain function. Lest we forget, the key word here is “cosmetics.” So, does cosmetically better looking skin lead to improvement in #mentalhealth?   As a #dermatologist with 20 years of experience doing #cosmetic procedures, my personal answer is both YES and NO. I have seen patients’ self-esteem and attitude improve with their appearance (particularly as it relates to younger, healthier skin)—this is why I decided to get into cosmetic #dermatology. As a first year dermatology resident in the year 2000, I treated my first #Botox patient; when she returned 4 months later, she told me how much the treatment had changed her life (both personally and professionally). Later, several studies emerged to show that botulinum toxin injections between the brows do in fact lead to a decreased rate of depression—so, YES, looking better (and frowning less!) can make us feel better.    However, I don’t know that we can go so far as to say that the use of specific creams will make your brain function better. A basic full-body #moisturizer and #sunprotection have been linked to better #health, and moisturizing one’s whole body twice a day has been clinically proven to drop the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (which can decrease risk of cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer’s disease).
