Unfortunately, seborrheic #dermatitis (SD) is often underestimated—especially in Black individuals, despite being the third most common dermatologic complaint in this group. In this article for Medscape, Dr. Shawn Kwatra from the University of Maryland highlights the importance of addressing SD in #skin of color, emphasizing that while scalp involvement is easily noticed, SD's signs in darker skin can be overlooked. With new FDA-approved treatments like 0.3% roflumilast foam (Zoryve) showing high efficacy, there’s now more reason than ever to bring SD into focus. This therapy doesn’t replace traditional options but enhances them, offering an effective first-line treatment. #Dermatologists should proactively identify SD, even when patients visit for other reasons. Beyond treatment, SD's link to the skin and gut #microbiome suggests exciting avenues for future therapies. According to the The National Institutes of Health, acne affects about 80% of people between the ages of 11-30. #Acne is a particularly common struggle for many #teens, and it can be frustrating to manage alongside the everyday challenges of school, extracurriculars, and hormone changes. The New England Journal of Medicine emphasizes the emotional toll of acne on #teenagers, as it can take a serious toll on #selfesteem, and can even lead to higher rates of anxiety and depression. The good news is, with the right #skincare routine, most cases of acne are entirely treatable! #Dermatologists recommend foam-based cleansers for teens with oily and acne-prone skin, as these can help keep #breakouts under control. Key ingredients to look for include #salicylicacid, which helps exfoliate and unclog pores, and #benzoylperoxide, which fights acne-causing bacteria. For more stubborn acne, #retinoids like adapalene (available over the counter) can be a game-changer by unclogging pores and regulating cell turnover. If you're new to these ingredients, it’s important to gradually work them into your #skincareroutine to avoid #skin irritation. Spot treatments can also be highly effective for targeting individual breakouts. Remember, #acnemanagement is a process, and it’s normal for results to take time. Today, thanks to advances in #medicalscience, we know that prurigo nodularis (PN) involves a complex interplay between the immune and nervous systems, leading to severe and pathological itching. In an exciting #dermatology development, the @FDA has just approved the breakthrough treatment Nemluvio® (nemolizumab-ilto), which targets Interleukin (IL)-31, a key neuroimmune cytokine involved in the severe itching, inflammation, and fibrosis seen in PN. Nemolizumab, a humanized IgG2 monoclonal antibody, works by inhibiting IL-31 signaling. Its approval is backed by data from two successful Phase 3 #clinicaltrials: OLYMPIA 1 and OLYMPIA 2, involving 560 patients. Results showed a significant reduction in itch intensity and #skin clearance for many patients, marking a huge step forward in managing this challenging condition. Key Efficacy Results: OLYMPIA 1: 22% of patients on nemolizumab saw at least a 4-point reduction in itch intensity, compared to just 2% in the placebo group. OLYMPIA 2: 25% of patients on nemolizumab experienced similar improvements versus 4% on placebo. Advancements like these highlight the importance of continued #dermatologyresearch in the connection between the immune system and chronic conditions.
