Today is World Homeless Day, a day of remembering and a day for compassion. The United Nations conducted a global study in 2005 and at that time it was estimated that more than 100 million people worldwide were homeless, and at least 1.5 billion people lacked housing that was adequate. And the trend was toward a crisis. We see that today in CA and across the US. The drivers of homelessness are many and the remedies just as many. But if on no other day, take a moment to learn about the crisis in your city and do one thing to help a neighbor at risk of, or living unhoused. https://lnkd.in/eKVRgkB9

Friends Outside offers caring, evidence-based services to adults and youth who are incarcerated and post release.
About us
We are a nonprofit community-based organization that has been providing programs and services to families and individuals involved in the criminal justice system since 1955. We understand that there is a cycle of crime and delinquency, and we believe that the cycle can be broken. We believe in respect for others; in the capacity of human beings to change; and in the importance of the family and the community in the development of resilient, responsible and capable people. Our Family Liaison Services include assistance for inmates and family members: addressing family issues and providing guidance in preparation for return to the community. Working one-on-one with inmates, our trained and experienced Case Managers provide critical intervention in family emergencies and guidance in dealing with children’s fears and apprehensions. Our Parenting Program for Incarcerated Parents, offered in all California state prison, provides high risk parents the opportunity to provide their children with the best parenting possible. This program provides the skills and motivation to parent effectively from a distance and to reunify successfully with the family, after release. Visitor Centers, operated by Friends Outside at every California state prison, provide assistance to families who are visiting friends and family members. These Visitor Centers provide childcare, transportation, information and resources, and a restful and welcoming place to stop for a moment before and after visits. Our Creative Conflict Resolutions Program addresses the special treatment needs of the violent offender. We believe that change is possible, and current research on our CCR program supports that belief. Interpersonal and family violence is of particular concern, and CCR is a proven method of addressing violence within the family context...even gang-related violence. There are several common misconceptions about what is truly happening with regard to crime, homelessness, etc. and what the data tells us. Despite what you see on social media and the news, crime is down, not up. "Crime is not surging — even though candidates for elected office, from both major parties up and down the ballot, pretend otherwise. Claims of crime hikes can be very persuasive: In October 2023, 77% of surveyed Americans believed there was more crime in the U.S. than there was the year before. But as both old and new data show, this is simply not true. New data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics on criminal victimization in 2023 shows that crimes of almost all types were down from 2022, and many types of violent crime were equal to or lower than their reported rates in 2019." “Given what I know about how difficult it is to adjust to life outside of prison after many years inside, I expected suicide mortality ratios to increase with age,” Fitch shares. “However, we found that the rate of suicide death generally decreased with age. The youngest formerly incarcerated people (18 to 21 years old) had three times more suicide deaths of their non-incarcerated peers; those in their thirties and forties had less than twice the suicide mortality; and those in their fifties had a lower suicide rate than their peers. It was only in the oldest adults — in their sixties and up — that we saw an elevated suicide mortality rate again.” This 2024 study illuminates the elevated risk of suicide among the recently released. "Approximately 600,000 people are released from state and federal prisons every year, according to federal government data, but while the U.S. spends more than $80 billion a year on incarceration, it only spends about $100 million on reentry programming to support their reintegration into the community." (does not include county jails) We are setting our newly free friends up for failure when we don't invest in reentry supports. Suicide happens in prison. CA Corrections Department has an active suicide prevention program, implemented and monitored by the same. The incarcerated is a vulnerable group given the trauma of incarceration and for many, added to a life with other traumatic experiences. "In 2022, 128,209 discrete individuals spent at least one night confined in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). Out of that population, 19 individuals died by suicide during their time in confinement. This was an increase from the previous year of 15 deaths by suicide. The 2022 rate is 19.6 suicides per 100,000 inmates." 19.6 per 100,000 is nearly twice that of the general CA population (10.2 per 100,000), according to the National Institutes of Health. It is important to note that mental health concerns were present for most in prison suicides. From the same 2022 CDCR report referenced above. "Seventeen (89%) of the 19 suicide decedents were patients in the statewide mental health program, and 8 of these decedents had a previous suicide attempt in the community or in CDCR." There are many things that can be done to prevent suicide in prison, and not the least of which is for the incarcerated to have connection to a hopeful tomorrow which comes by frequent family visits. You are a part of the prevention here. We at Friends Outside are happy to help. https://lnkd.in/gxRN4Sw2
