“Imagine in 2019 saying ‘well we think there might be this pandemic’ and saying ‘oh, it hasn’t happened for 100 years, that’s all hypothetical’. It’s hypothetical [until] it’s too late.” Researcher Tom Barnes joined John Sherman on the For Humanity podcast to talk about how we need to properly plan and prepare for AI risks – basic things we can do now. We exist to bridge the gap between entrepreneurs and the charities making the most difference in the world.
About us
We are a global nonprofit empowering entrepreneurs to do the most good possible with their charitable giving --- Members pledge to give a small percentage of their personal proceeds to the charities of their choice following an exit, and the community also meets up for dinners, forums and talks exploring the latest news at the intersection of charity and technology. Founders Pledge is bridging the gap between the private and social sector, by encouraging entrepreneurs to apply the same rigour and thoughtfulness to their philanthropy as they do to their business. We also provide research, consultancy and support around every donation, so that pledgers can feel confident that their funds are going to charities that are evidence based, transparent, and impactful. Membership and all services provided, including events, online content and research, are completely free, meaning that 100% of every donation made goes directly to the members' charities of choice. Companies are already competing to develop more powerful AI. What happens when countries compete? A racing dynamic between major powers could have catastrophic effects. A race incentivizes speed over safety, but cutting corners on testing and other safety precautions would increase the risk of AI-related accidents and misuse. Within a few years, once it’s clear that advanced AI is an utterly decisive military technology, the governments of major powers like China and the US may have no choice but to launch their own AI efforts to prevent the other side from getting to superintelligence first—which could fairly be described as an AI version of the Manhattan Project. Philanthropists can help slow the race to dangerous AI. Learn how: https://lnkd.in/es8dvp5y

What will the upcoming US elections mean for climate? Our team has spent the past 18 months thinking about the potential outcomes and preparing. We’ve diversified the Climate Fund’s strategy and grant-making, investing more heavily in Europe and Canada, and right-of-center climate groups in the US. The US elections next week will likely be one of the most consequential events for climate progress this decade. Will the climate policy achievements of the Biden administration be maintained, or will they be repealed? The outcome will have serious international consequences, too. The US is a global force for clean energy innovation, driving technological change over time. One example of the ripple effects of US domestic policy: it’s estimated that more than 66% of the emissions saved through parts of the Inflation Reduction Act will occur outside the US. Dig into what’s at stake in this election, and what climate philanthropists can do: https://lnkd.in/eEvQu4q9

EIDU is a high-impact charity and one of our recommendations in education. They stand out for using two of the most rigorously-evaluated and cost-effective interventions shown to boost learning in low- and middle-income countries. Congratulations to Bernd Roggendorf and the whole team on their progress and success in Kenya! We're thrilled to share that Forbes has just highlighted our mission and recently published open-source announcement in an insightful article! Julia Brodsky dives into our commitment to empowering educators, parents, and communities globally through collaborative, accessible tech solutions. This piece also illustrates the profound impact open-source technology can have on education... This is why we decided to unlock our proprietary source code over the next years, making it freely available to and modifiable by third parties for the sake of democratizing learning opportunities – and fostering a more equitable future for all. 📖 Read the full article here and join us on this journey: https://lnkd.in/e2XM45Fy #EducationForAll #EdTech #OpenSource #ImpactDriven #EducationEquity #EIDU

I love the Founders Pledge model and how it is encouraging and stewarding new philanthropy into our sector. Plus I am a fan of Emily Hoble - her commitment and expert knowledge of the social impact sector! 💪🏽
I recently decided to formalise my commitment to positive social impact by joining Founders Pledge. For any entrepreneur wondering how to get started with philanthropy or be more strategic in how you give, I highly recommend connecting with David Goldberg or Emily Hoble. I'm delighted to say Prosper is also hosting an event in partnership with Founders Pledge this November. Our guest speaker is Dr Daniel Susskind. Daniel's work explores the impact of technology, and particularly AI, on work and society. In his latest book, nominated for FT Business Book of the Year 2024, titled "Growth: A reckoning", he explores what the future holds for sustainable economic growth in a world facing a number of challenges from global warming, to overpopulation and inequality. Am personally excited to start this journey with such a brilliant mind to guide us!

What do chess and charity evaluation have in common? It’s hard to compare things that are difficult to measure. Like quantifying a chess player’s skill level, measuring the impact of some charities (especially those whose work can have effects years and decades in the future) can be highly uncertain, subjective, and imprecise. Our Research team has developed a new charity ratings system (inspired by the one used in chess) to better evaluate impact amidst uncertainties and unknowns. Around 1 in 3 women worldwide suffer from acts of physical or sexual violence. We've investigated high-leverage pathways to reduce violence against women and girls. More research into this will be valuable, but we’ve found three especially promising interventions. Learn more in our report: https://lnkd.in/eG6ksrVu

⭐ New recommendation for protecting women and girls Raising Voices have developed an evidence-based community program to prevent violence against women. SASA! empowers activism to shift harmful social norms within local communities. Based in Uganda, they’re a leader in the field; their program has been implemented in at least 30 countries and more than 75 organizations. With more funding, they can scale up their programming and expand into new countries in West Africa. Learn more https://lnkd.in/ePuz9N9i
