When is the last time you've done an inventory check on your lifelines? There are some folks who are now finding themselves in a position where they are trying to make a withdrawal from an account with no deposits. Regardless of how high or low you are in the workplace hierarchy, relationships still matter. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve spoken to leaders in the last year who admit they haven’t attended peer events, spoken to their vendors, or networked at all. Now many of them need help and are trying to reach out to people they haven’t spoken to in a very long time, or worse, purposely ignored historically. The day-to-day responsibilities we all have with work and family will consume the majority of our time. Relationship building must also be a weekly effort, whether that be a lunch, email, or phone call. Peers can assist with introductions. Vendors have a pulse on the market and an ear to the ground with their other clients. When your situation changes and help is needed, you’re far more likely to get effort from folks you have invested in. Make sure those accounts are funded.
