I had the honor of serving as a #keynote speaker at the Crittenton Services of Greater Washington Unity Girls Walk, representing the Black Nurse Collaborative, Inc. My topic, “You Are a Divine Vessel,” focused on embracing our unique strengths and the power each of us holds within. 💖✨ It was an incredible day filled with unity, inspiration, and strength as we walked together, celebrating the remarkable journeys of young women in our community. Together, we can uplift and empower one another! Here are some concerning statistics about teen girls in the U.S.: 1. **Mental Health**: Approximately 36% of teenage girls reported experiencing symptoms of depression, and around 30% have considered suicide. 2. **Body Image**: About 70% of teen girls feel pressure to be thin, with many engaging in unhealthy dieting practices. 3. **Bullying**: Around 20% of high school girls experience bullying, both in person and online, which can contribute to mental health issues. 4. **Sexual Violence**: Nearly 1 in 5 female high school students report experiencing sexual violence in their lifetime. Despite the odds here is a little of what I shared with the girls!! “…. today, I want to take a moment to talk directly to our incredible teen girls. You are the heartbeat of our future, full of potential, creativity, and strength. But too often, the world around us makes you feel unsafe, unseen, and unsupported. It’s time we change that narrative because you are DIVINE VESSELS! Last weekend was historic! The energy, the support, and the voices of teen girls were so powerful. Thank you to everyone who was a part of the magic with us. The inaugural Teen Girls Unity Walk was made possible by our incredible team, the wonderful teen girls we serve, our dedicated community members who joined us, and the unwavering generosity of our Unity Sponsors Office of Paid Family Leave for DC Department of Employment Services, ROBERT I SCHATTNER FOUNDATION INC, V & S FOUNDATION INC, Verizon, Giant Food, and The AFRO-American Newspapers. We are grateful to Shawn Yancy for being our gracious Host, our Secretary of State of DC Kimberly A. Bassett for joining us and giving warm and welcoming remarks, and Meedie L. Bardonille MSN, RN, PCCN-K, FCN, FADLN for inspiring us with her words of wisdom (and her dance moves)!
