Fitness ≠ Movement 🔔 Just because you cycle/row/run every day doesn’t mean your body is getting the movement it needs. 🔔 We are continually asking our bodies to do random things we haven’t trained for and getting in 30 minutes of one repetitive motion a few times a week isn’t enough to keep the aches, pains, and general “feeling your age” away. And I’m not talking about running a marathon here! I’m talking about being able to stand at the kitchen sink and do dishes, get on the floor to play with your dog or kids, sit at a desk and type all day, play pickup basketball, go out dancing with friends, sit over the pottery wheel for an afternoon, or even walk the golf course for a full round.  Riding a spin bike to get your heart rate up trains your cardiovascular system and some very specific muscles that help you ride a bike.  Our bodies are masters at adapting to stimuli.  When the stimulus is the same EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. you get better in that ONE way. What then happens is you lose strength and flexibility in other body areas because you. aren’t. training. them. and therefore the body doesn’t need to keep that movement pathway as an available option (it costs too much energy).  Intentional movement involves moving your body in all planes of motion (flexion/extension, rotation, side bending) and working from the core outward.  Only a few fitness methods really do this, and of course, Pilates is my favorite.  What’s yours?

Don't take my word for it, Flexia members say it best: "I love this class when I wake up with a sore back. Ten minutes and then I'm ready to go!" There are more reasons to workout than just burning calories and I can't think of a better method than Pilates that exemplifies that.

Pilates instructors glorify "moving beautifully" - which often means moving and looking like a dancer. While Pilates emphasizes control, flow, and centering which often lead to more graceful movement, Kelly and I break down why we want the meaning of this phrasing to change in our latest podcast episode over at Flexia Talks.

“Good Job” -Your Pilates Instructor No longer the only way to measure success in Pilates. The measure of “success” in a cardio-based activity like running can be seen in a variety of metrics.  For example, a faster mile pace or a longer distance run without stopping. The measure of “success” in strength training can be seen in the ability to lift a heavier weight. But the measure of “success” in Pilates, historically, has been whatever words your Pilates instructor told you. Sure, running and strength training can make you feel better, too.  But let’s be real, we’re not wearing apple watches because we all trust how well we feel.  We want to see proof in the numbers. The premise behind Flexia’s Movement Quality Score (MQS) is that Pilates cares about the quality of your movement, and the way teachers deliver instruction and watch their clients move is the key to developing a measurable score for performance in Pilates. Tens of millions of people around the world swear by Pilates with no quantifiable progress. How many people would do Pilates if it had a measurable indicator of success? Flexia is going to find out.
