Earlier this week, our CHAIN members heard from Dr. Vishaal Virani, MBBS (YouTube UK & Ireland) and Dr Kate Grailey (Fleming Initiative) on the best practices behind impactful, awareness-raising video content and how to participate in our upcoming CHAIN Pulse on September 26th. It was invigorating to have our CHAIN members' expertise and enthusiasm focused on how they can best tackle the global threat of antimicrobial resistance through the power of their video-based online content. To raise public awareness of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), the Fleming Initiative is working with clinician creators to mobilise a coordinated video message, coinciding with the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on AMR. This is a rare opportunity where the world’s eyes will be on the issue of AMR and a great opportunity for clinician creators to leverage their skills, knowledge, and influence to raise awareness and promote their platform to new audiences. ⚠️🚨 One of the BIGGEST threats we face as humanity is Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). 🦠 But if you ask most people what “Antimicrobial Resistance” means to them, they’ll probably say… “ehh I don’t know!” 💊 The reality is, the misuse of antibiotics and other anti-infective drugs means that we’re helping the rise of ‘superbugs’. The Imperial College London-led Fungal One Health and Antimicrobial Resistance (F1AMR) Network, which the Fleming Initiative is a partner of, just secured £4.8 million from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR) across sectors and disciplines. Led by Professor Darius Armstrong-James, the F1AMR Network will develop solutions to help tackle the emergence of drug-resistant fungal infections. Designed around a ‘One Health’ approach – which recognises that the health of people is closely connected to the health of animals and our shared environment – the network will cover healthcare, agricultural and pharmaceutical industries, as well as working with key policy makers. The F1AMR network will collaborate with seven other new networks across the UK, including experts from the University of Exeter, Queen Mary University of London, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Queen's University Belfast, University of Oxford, and the University of Birmingham. Professor the Lord Darzi of Denham, Chair of the Fleming Initiative, and GSK’s CEO, Emma Walmsley, joined Bloomberg's Francine Lacqua on 'The Pulse' to discuss the Fleming Initiative's and GSK's efforts to combat the rise of antimicrobial resistance. As Lord Darzi said in the interview, "The big component of [the Fleming Initiative's] multi-sectoral approach to [antimicrobial resistance] is not just science, it is actually engaging citizens globally. We need to activate citizens that the misuse of antibiotics on human health or animal health could have a serious detrimental effect on the efficacy of antibiotics when you're ill, when you really need them." GSK chief executive officer Emma Walmsley said the UK is leading the way on antimicrobial resistance, which the pharmaceutical company pledged £45 million to work on in a partnership with Imperial College London known as the Fleming Initiative.
