First Solar is proud to commission its new Ohio R&D innovation center, believed to be the largest facility of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. It covers 1.3 million square feet and includes a high-tech pilot manufacturing line to produce full-sized prototypes of thin film and tandem PV modules. The Jim Nolan Center is part of an approximately half-billion-dollar investment by First Solar in R&D infrastructure in Ohio, which also includes a perovskite development line that’s expected to be commissioned in the second half of 2024. A glassmaking facility in Meadville, PA had shut down in 2020 in response to slowing demand from the US auto industry and the effects of the pandemic. In 2023, First Solar signed an agreement with Vitro Architectural Glass to manufacture float glass for its American-made solar modules in the factory. In response, Vitro announced it would invest $93.6 million to rebuild and modernize the plant, creating approximately 130 new high-quality jobs. Vitro then increased its investment to about $180 million to upgrade the facility. The plant is expected to be operational in 2025, bringing the jobs, economic growth, and tax revenues that domestic manufacturing stimulates.
