This paves the way for early construction and federal support. “A magnificent new Midtown Bus Terminal will knit together New Jersey and New York to create an even stronger, more economically vital and easily accessible region.” – Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole. A portal is defined as a grand entrance to an important space. As such, portals are important in signifying that one is making a transition to a new realm. Entering a park should be a shift in consciousness. This Portal to Hartford’s Colt Park plays on the history of the property with the Iconic Blue Onion Dome from the nearby historic firearms factory referenced.

FHI Studio is proud to have played a role in the restoration of Kern Park, transforming it into a vibrant, accessible space for the Bristol community. The dedication and vision behind this project have created not just a place for recreation, but a sanctuary for nature and a resource for environmental education. Thank you to Dr. Joshua T. Medeiros, Ed.D, CPRE and the City of Bristol, Connecticut for entrusting us with this important work, and a special shoutout to Phil Barlow for his leadership and commitment to expanding our urban green spaces!

In the 1980’s, Kern Park was closed by the Board of Park Commissioners and turned over to the City of Bristol for development. Fortunately, development never came to fruition and the park remained mostly dormant for decades. Almost half a century later our team restored Kern Park thanks to $300,000 in American Rescue Plan Funding. This included restoration of existing trails and development of new trails, educational signage, and a formal entrance. Additionally, the removal of blighted tennis courts allowed us to reclaim the natural environment with a pollinator garden – expanding our urban green space. Thank you to Phil Barlow and FHI Studio for being tremendous partners on this project!

At FHI Studio, we are committed to creating safer and more inclusive urban environments. We are proud to share that earlier this summer, FHI Studio led the City of Norwalk, Connecticut’s first Complete Streets demonstration project! Our team transformed an underutilized lane into a vibrant parklet and expanded sidewalks for better accessibility. We also added a new crosswalk and refreshed stop bars to enhance safety. The project was met with positive feedback, underscoring the potential of innovative street designs to make a meaningful difference. We are eager to continue working with Norwalk to make our streets safer and more inclusive for everyone. We’re “beyond” excited 🙌 Congratulations to MassDOT on the publication of the final Beyond Mobility Plan, a blueprint for the future of equitable, resilient transportation in Massachusetts. A vision for transportation that focuses on what it does rather than what it is, the multiyear process for this plan considered thousands of public comments to identify six key priority areas: 🔹 Safety 🔹 Destination connectivity 🔹 Travel experience 🔹 Reliability 🔹 Supporting clean transportation 🔹 Resiliency 🔗 Link to the final plan in the comments below. We’re honored to be the lead consultants helping move Massachusetts forward with our expertise in people-first solutions for an uncertain future. We're hopeful MassDOT@40 will be even better than MassDOT@15. 👏 Big kudos to our team: John Kaliski, Leah Pickett, Hannah Santiago, AICP, Karl Reinhardt, Victoria Kurlander, Joe Zissman, Rachel Chiquoine, PhD, Yvonne T., Ron Basile among many others. Thanks to our amazing partners, VHB, FHI Studio, and Archipelago Strategies Group, (ASG). https://lnkd.in/eSfJzMB6
