Black moms are roughly 25% more likely to have a baby via unplanned C-section than a white mom. Why is that? One of the largest-ever studies on infants of color analyzed nearly one million births between 2008 and 2017 across 68 hospitals in New Jersey to uncover this stat. It wasn’t due to the fact that the doctor was a woman. A Black doctor didn’t seem to make a difference either. Not to mention, a healthy Black mother is about 20% more likely to have a baby via C-section than a white mother with a similar medical history, even if they’re seen by the same doctor in the same hospital. The researchers suggest a few reasons: ➡️ Implicit racial bias could play a role ➡️ There may be a “financial incentive” to fill operating rooms ➡️ Because Black women in the U.S. have higher maternal mortality rates, doctors may be quicker to rush them into surgery It’s interesting to also note that one-third of all babies in the U.S. are delivered surgically, and that’s twice as high as the World Health Organization recommends because there are more risks that come with C-section births than vaginal births.

📢 Huge announcement! 📢 We are thrilled to share that we are partnering with ATTN: to host our first ever Women in AI Summit on November 13 in NYC. Women hold just 26% of data and AI-centered jobs, with a significant gender gap at the executive level. This is a troubling statistic considering the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, its pervasiveness, and the threat of data bias. The solution lies in hiring, promoting and retaining women leaders, changing company culture, and especially in elevating women’s stories in order to inspire the next generation of young women and girls to enter the field. #AI doesn’t have to take away opportunity – it can create it. Join us for a half-day summit with ATTN:, hosted in collaboration with Microsoft Advertising, HP, and Amazon Web Services (AWS), at the inaugural Women in AI Summit, November 13 at New York’s Webster Hall. We'll feature an impressive lineup of speakers: - Chelsea Clinton - Ashley Graham - Arianna Huffington - Allie K. Miller - Dr. Joy Buolamwini - Minerva Tantoco + more! The Women in AI Summit is the beginning of a larger movement to ensure that women are fully represented and actively shaping the future of AI. Maggie Smith, a trailblazer of British theater, has passed away. Smith’s honors throughout her long career are staggering. An EGOT, she has won two Academy Awards, four Golden Globes, three Emmys, and a Tony Award. She captivated audiences across generations—mentoring Harry Potter as Professor McGonagall and stealing scenes as Violet Crawley in Downton Abbey. Seamlessly transitioning between stage and screen, after years on Broadway she returned to Hollywood as sweet, grandmotherly Wendy in Steven Spielberg’s 1991 Peter Pan film, Hook, and played Whoopi Goldberg’s mother superior in the 1992 hit Sister Act. And the roles kept coming. In fact, it was late in Smith’s career that she became more popular than ever before. Her extraordinary career paved the way for countless women in the arts, leaving an indelible mark on both stage and screen. When asked about her legacy after being awarded the Evening Standard Icon Award she said, “Everything’s an icon. If you have been around long enough you are an icon.”🌟

✨ #Trailblazers ✨“The customer is our boss and we treat her like a queen.” Lillian Vernon was a marketing and advertising genius who connected so precisely with her audience, forever influencing the way businesses interact with customers through direct-to-consumer marketing. Her entrepreneurial spirit blossomed at age 24, and instead of staying home and having children as was the norm at the time, she went to work, launching a successful business that became one of the first to ever go public with a female CEO at the helm. Join us Oct 7-9 in the #EqualityLounge at #AWNewYork24. All are welcome. RSVP here: https://lnkd.in/gxBtvjY8
