“Exaggerating the negative element in our lives is familiar behavior for all too many of us. But this obsession is our choice. We can stop at any moment. We can decide to let go of a situation that we can’t control, turn it over to [a higher power of our own understanding], and be free to look ahead at the possibilities for happiness. Perhaps we can learn to accept a serious situation in our lives as a special opportunity for growth first of all, but even more as an opportunity to let [our higher power] work in our lives. Searching. Fearless. Step 4 is a step of action and truly a turning point in the recovery journey for those in AA and NA. Amid sickness and substance use disorder, it’s usually habitual to push down bad feelings, block memories, and avoid personal responsibility for wrongdoings. With pen to paper, step four asks you to start at the beginning and not to spare a single detail. In this step, you work to make an honest timeline of all significant life events, personal strengths, values, mistakes, those you have hurt and/or harmed, your character defects, fears, uncertainties, hopes, and so on. The goal is not to put yourself down, but instead, to use this inventory as a tool of insight to begin your journey forward. August 07, 2019 The gratitude list - Page 229 "We focus on anything that isn't going our way and ignore all the beauty in our lives." Basic Text, p. 80 It's easy to be grateful when everything runs smoothly. If we get a raise at work, we're grateful. If we get married, we're grateful. If someone surprises us with a nice present or an unasked favor, we're grateful. But if we get fired, divorced, or disappointed, gratitude flies out the window. We find ourselves becoming obsessed with the things that are wrong, even though everything else may be wonderful. This is where we can use a gratitude list. We sit down with a pen and paper and list the people for whom we are grateful. We all have people who've supported us through life's upheavals. We list the spiritual assets we have attained, for we know we could never make it through our present circumstances without them. Last, but not least, we list our recovery itself. Whatever we have that we are grateful for goes on the list. We're sure to find that we have literally hundreds of things in our lives that inspire our gratitude. Even those of us who are suffering from an illness or who have lost all material wealth will find blessings of a spiritual nature for which we can be thankful. An awakening of the spirit is the most valuable gift an addict can receive. “If I accept and act upon the advice of those who have made the program work for themselves, I have a chance to outgrow the limits of the past. Some problems will shrink to nothingness, while others may require patient, well-thought-out action. Listening deeply when others share can develop intuition in handling problems which arise unexpectedly. It is usually best for me to avoid impetuous action. Attending a meeting or calling a fellow A.A. member will usually reduce tension enough to bring relief to a desperate sufferer like me. Why seek a power outside of yourself? The old recovery saying covers it perfectly: If you could get yourself sober on your own, you already would have. For both members of AA and NA, this step is the step of willingness. Both fellowships emphasize the phrase “as we understood him.” This means that your understanding of God is personal and the definition of a higher power may vary greatly from person to person. This step encourages individuals to define a higher power that makes sense to them, whether it is religious, spiritual, or simply a belief in something greater than oneself.
