🟠 Milwaukee Food Leaders Lab Spotlight: 𝗖𝗶𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗚𝗶𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘀𝗼𝗻 🟢 Through her service year with AmeriCorps, Ciara has been working to bring fresh food and gardening opportunities to a Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) high school. As a nursing home cook, Ciara has witnessed the health disparities that occur when you do not have access to healthy and fresh food regardless of age or situation. She has worked with MPS to increase knowledge of hydroponic farming with students, served as a dietary aid and cook for a nursing home, and previously designed a nursing home garden that focused on producing food for the kitchens while incorporating sensory plants for the residents. 🟠 Milwaukee Food Leaders Lab Spotlight: 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗻𝗮 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗿 🟢 Brenna currently manages a group home and provides resources for 12–17-year-old LGBTQ+ youth in the child welfare system, many of whom come to the home with food insecurity trauma. She is also the housing manager for the 18-24 program, supporting those aging out of the foster care system and experiencing housing insecurity. She intends to use the skills obtained through the Food Leaders Lab program to advocate for food allowances in and for state licensed group homes. Through her own lived experience, Brenna is working to ensure that the people she works with are provided with resources such as healthy food, meal planning, food budgeting, and cooking as they learn how to support themselves independently.
