The Franklin & Marshall Global Barometers™ measures global LGBTQI+ human rights in 204 countries and regions 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧
About us
The first-of-their-kind Global Barometer of Gay Rights (GBGR) and Global Barometer of Transgender RIghts (GBTR) are country-by-country rating systems measuring the human rights of sexual minorities in 204 countries. The rigor and methodology of the Global Barometers make them a unique tool for discerning human rights globally and for policymaking. The Global Barometers provide the following: -Individual grades and scores, calculated annually for 204 countries -Nine-year (2011-2019) trends for each grade level: Protecting, Tolerant, Resistant, Intolerant, Persecuting -World maps showing grade levels by country and region -A multi-year worldwide mean score The GBGR and GBTR assign each country a letter grade on the familiar A-F scale. This grading system is based on over 200,000 data points across five dimensions: -Constitutional Protection -De Facto (Civil & Political) Protection -LGBT Rights Advocacy -Socioeconomic Rights -Societal Persecution

The latest F&M Global Barometers Snapshot Series reveals that regions that offer nonbinary gender markers, compared to other protections, tend to report better lived realities for #intersex individuals. While discrimination protections on the basis of sex characteristics and prohibitions against surgical interventions on intersex minors are both essential to improving the lived realities of intersex individuals, nonbinary gender markers had the most direct correlation with positive lived experiences. As of 2022, only 50% of countries offered nonbinary gender markers, and the majority of these countries are located in Western Europe. Today we’re thrilled to launch The Economic Case for LGBTQ+ Inclusion in Southeast Asia, which features focus countries Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam. The report analysed pre-existing research and our own newly produced data with a number of our 27 propositions. These include: Brain Drain, Competitiveness, National Reputation, Innovation and Financial Performance. Our findings show that countries in Southeast Asia could be losing up to $32.9 billion per annum due to LGBTQ+ discrimination. For example, due to the LGBTQ+ wage gap and healthcare costs such as LGBTQ+ rates of depression and the cost of response to HIV and AIDS. The full report is available for download below. It is available in English, Indonesian, Malay, Thai and Vietnamese. We have also produced shorter ‘focus’ documents for all six of the countries, with additional native translations for Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnamese.
