Successful family business leaders focus on their business governance by creating business boards. But they also recognize that their businesses are only a piece of their families’ story. Family councils can serve as equally powerful stabilizing structures for enterprising families because they provide a legacy-focused complement to business boards. Family councils provide the critical governance to support a family’s affairs well beyond the business, particularly when it is a multigeneration, multi-branch legacy family. Jeremy S. Lurey, Ph.D. of The Family Business Consulting Group, Inc. (FBCG) provides guidance on laying a strong foundation for generational success. https://lnkd.in/eWNFFQWc #familybusiness #governance #familycouncils

Recruiting your first external CEO is a big decision for any family business. Often, it can take years to decide to recruit from outside the company. Most family firms don’t embark on an external search until only after the painstaking process of evaluating a range of internal options (both family and non-family) and weighing the interests of the various stakeholders who will be affected by the decision. While making the decision to recruit an external CEO may be an accomplishment, it is just the beginning of the succession journey. The hard part is next: identifying, attracting and hiring your next CEO. As Heather O'Keefe and Jason Hecker of Egon Zehnder write, the most overlooked step in CEO recruitment is stakeholder management. The human aspect of the recruiting process, including how to best work with stakeholders, is vital to a smooth transition. https://lnkd.in/gvpmyqgx #familybusiness #CEO #executiverecruitment
