🆕 Twenty Years Young - The new edition of EDA’s European Defence Matters magazine is out! The European security environment has changed dramatically since EDA’s establishment, and so have we. As #EDAturns20 this year, the new European Defence Matters sheds light on the Agency’s past achievements and assesses the future of #EUdefence cooperation. While NATO will remain the cornerstone of Europe’s collective defence, EDA’s work on 155mm #ammunition procurement in support of Ukraine, as well as its role in marshalling collaborative defence projects, illustrate how EDA is helping to make the #EU a security provider. EDA has proved its worth since its birth on 12 July 2004 — and continues to do so. EDA’s Head of Agency, High Representative Josep Borrell, and EDA’s Chief Executive, Jiří Šedivý, explain why the EU needs to continue to develop its common defence policy. EDA’s initiatives in #autonomous systems, outlined in this edition, reveal much about warfare of the future. Finland’s Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen sets out his key tasks for EU defence, as well as what it means to be part of NATO. We also hear from a Swedish think-tanker at the Atlantic Council, Anna Wieslander, on what Sweden’s new membership of the alliance means for Europe. Call to #industry and economic operators: procurement cluster on enablers for safe integration of military #air capabilities in the #EuropeanSky   Military operations rely heavily on secure and unhindered access to airspace. This access is crucial for all aircraft types, from traditional manned aircraft to the newest unmanned aircraft systems (#UAS). 🛩 However, the growing complexity of #airspace usage, with the introduction of novel technologies and evolving military tactics, presents a significant challenge. Recognizing this complexity, the European Defence Agency has taken a leading role in promoting safe airspace integration. The "Enablers for safe airspace integration of military air capabilities in the European sky" represents a significant initiative aimed at equipping European militaries for efficient and secure airspace access. This cluster initiative encompasses four distinct projects, each tackling specific aspects of safe airspace integration: Lot 1️⃣ - UAS Experimental Integration: focuses on developing and testing new technologies that facilitate seamless and safe integration of UAS into shared airspace, in all spectrum environments – high TRL. Lot 2️⃣ - UAS Risk Assessment: tackles the crucial task of assessing the risks posed by, and to, UAS operating within shared airspace. Lot 3️⃣ - High-Altitude Operations addresses security and defence challenges and opportunities associated with operations conducted at high altitudes. Lot 4️⃣ - Needs-assessment, Market research and Consultation: aims at collecting the requirements of UAS end-users, conducting state of the art review and execution of a market research and consultations on airspace integration of military air capabilities. Roll-out of the next generation of #MARSUR technology: successful deployment phase after the approval of the User Acceptance Test (UAT) results by the 16 contributing Member States: BE, BG, CY, DE, EL, ES, FI, FR, IE, IT, MT, NL, PL, PT, RO, SE. All tests outlined in the approved User Acceptance Test Plan & Use Case Scenarios of real maritime track and information exchanges were fully and correctly executed, demonstrating the robustness and resilience of the MARSUR network. 16 contributing Member States now have an effective system for developing European Maritime Situational Awareness based on the MARSUR III network, and the deployment phase will provide confidence that the use of the network will increase, making it the tool of choice in the very short term and a capability to be recommended to any maritime commander. https://lnkd.in/gHuXcxaj

The 5th CapTech Space meeting, organised by the Secretariato Generale https://lnkd.in/dzdG8fVy and hosted by the Istituto di Scienze Militari Aeronautiche (ISMA) of the Italian Air Force, took place in Florence, Italy, from 2 to 4 July. Led by EDA, the event brought together over 100 experts in space defence from national governments, research and technology organisations, industry, academia, and enterprises across Europe. The primary focus of the meeting was on collaborative research projects that align with Member States' interests and national priorities, with significant input from industry. Key discussions included updates on the ongoing ASSAI project (Autonomous-Space Situational Awareness and Artificial Intelligence) and the newly signed LEO2VLEO project, which aims to develop, launch, and operate a constellation of satellites in low and very low Earth orbits for military crisis response. Earlier this week, the European Defence Agency hosted the 17th policy level meeting of the EDA Single European Sky Miliary Aviation Board, a.k.a. #ESMAB. 🛫   In his welcoming remarks to the many civil and military aviation stakeholders participating in the meeting, EDA Chief Executive Jiří Šedivý, recalled the role of #ESMAB in achieving key defense and security priorities set up by the EU Defense Ministers:   ➡ Spend more and better together: #ESMAB is well suited to develop collaborative projects and civil-military synergies. Accommodation efforts towards Unmanned Aircraft System’s (#UAS) integration in the airspace are a good example in that respect.   ➡ Increase the EU’s ability to act: #ESMAB is also well suited to contribute to the implementation of the #MilitaryMobility pledge and to optimise the use of the airspace for civil and military aviation.   ➡ Strengthen the EU’s resilience and secure access to strategic domains: #ESMAB can contribute to the definition of a communications, navigation and surveillance (#CNS) operational network that will guarantee the continuity of Military Operations and training.   All these are just few examples illustrating the criticality of ESMAB and highlighting the imperative of the civil-military collaboration in the current security and defence context. ✈ 🛩   In the framework of Single European Sky, EDA will continue to act, when required, as a balancing actor, voicing your joint military needs and positions in the EU, while developing structured synergies with the European Commission services and related bodies and organisations, and exploring opportunities for EU financial incentives. #EUdefence #strongertogether European Commission SESAR Deployment Manager SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency OCCAR (Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation) EUROCAE NATO
