Widespread adoption of standards designed to improve care for children in U.S. hospital emergency departments could save an estimated 2,143 lives each year, suggests an NIH-funded study. The National Pediatric Readiness Project’s standards cover essential training, care coordination, and the equipment needed to treat young patients effectively. The estimated cost to adopt these standards ranges from no cost to $11.84 per child, depending on the state. Currently, only 17% of emergency departments meet high pediatric readiness standards. If all hospitals reached this level, it could have major impacts to create a stronger healthcare system for children.
