An advocacy accelerator rooted in social justice, building power in our network of state-based LGBTQ+ advocacy groups.

About us

Equality Federation is an advocacy accelerator rooted in social justice, building power in our network of state-based lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) advocacy organizations. In 1997, these organizations came together to harness their collective knowledge and power. Since then, Equality Federation (Institute) has become the leading movement builder, national network, and strategic partner to our 40+ member organizations. Collectively, our member network mobilizes more than 2 million supporters across the country to advance equality and justice. From Equality Florida to Freedom Oklahoma to Basic Rights Oregon, we amplify the power of the state-based LGBTQ+ movement.

CHLP is grateful to not just to be a part of but to help drive conversations that challenge the narratives that lead to the overcriminalization of Black and LGBTQ+ people living with HIV. Executive Director S. Mandisa Moore-O'Neal attended the Equality Federation Institute's 2024 Leadership Conference in Portland, Oregon in July where she presented in a workshop on How HIV Criminalization is the Embodiment of Mass Incarceration and Racism. Mandisa also attended and participated in the Q&A at the Lunch Plenary, Frontlines and Forward Action: Black & LGBTQ+ leaders chart a new course on decriminalizing HIV domestically and globally. Watch the recording and full discussion at www.eqfed.org/HIVforum, (see Mandisa at 1:03:50). #HIVAdvocates

Recently, BlaqOut Manager of Public Policy and Advocacy Devin Hursey attended the 27th annual Equality Federation Leadership Conference. During the live-action forum addressing HIV criminalization, Devin asked, “Can the panel speak to the role of people living with HIV? Because in this work I’ve been harmed by allies who did not know their place.” Devin’s question drove a critical component of the much-needed conversation. Check out the panel’s response to Devin’s question as well as the full discussion at www.eqfed.org/HIVforum!

Happy Birthday Marsha! 🌟 Today, we're celebrating the legacy of Marsha "Pay it No Mind" Johnson on what would have been her 79th birthday. Her pivotal role in the LGBTQ+ rights movement, from her courageous participation in the Stonewall Riots to her unwavering support for LGBTQ+ youth of color and her advocacy for those impacted by HIV/AIDS, laid the groundwork for the movement we continue today. Marsha's spirit remains a guiding light in our collective pursuit of LGBTQ+ liberation. #LGBTQHistory #TransRights #MarshaPJohnson

It happens because people make decisions that are sometimes very impulsive and of the moment, but those moments are cumulative realities. - Marsha P. Johnson.” Beside the text is a black and white image of Marsha smiling and looking directly at the camera. She is wearing a stylish, sequined, v-neck top and adorned in sparkling statement necklaces and earrings.

Today is Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, which is dedicated to raising awareness about HIV in Southern communities. The South faces a disproportionate impact, with higher numbers of people living with HIV. Social and systemic factors such as stigma, homophobia, discrimination, poverty, and limited access to quality healthcare contribute to these disparities and continue to drive inequities. No one’s health outcomes or access to care should be restricted by their geographic location! 📢 When we work to overcome barriers to HIV prevention, care, and treatment in every community, we can #StopHIVTogether. Did you know today is Trans Flag Day? 🏳️⚧️👇 Today, we honor the creation of the trans flag, a powerful symbol designed by Monica Helms on August 19th, 1999. The flag was born from a conversation with Michael Page, creator of the bisexual pride flag, who suggested the need for a trans flag. Just two weeks later, Helms crafted the flag we proudly celebrate today. The blue, pink, and white stripes symbolize the journey of transition and the diverse spectrum of gender identities. Together, these colors honor the wide range of experiences and identities within the trans community. 💗🤍🩵 #TransFlagDay #LGBTQHistory

    • Slide 1: A background image of a trans flag blowing in the wind in nature surrounded by greenery and sunlight. Dark blue text says, "Trans Flag Day, August 19th"
    • Slide 2: On a light sky background, there are images of the trans flag in the upper right and bottom left corners. Dark blue text says, "The pink and blue of the flag are now symbolic of trans people. Sometimes in nature, a sunset has the flag’s color. It seems as if trans people are everywhere, and, you know, we are everywhere. We are something special, and nature seems to understand that in lots of ways. - Monica Helms, Creator of the Trans Flag”

Drafting and introducing legislation as a coalition can be a labor of love. Advocates must navigate hostile political landscapes, build power and support, and work with legislative sponsors to get their bills through the legislative process. While it is a coalition’s primary goal to pass legislation, what happens when the legislative process or a bill itself is or becomes harmful? ⬇️ Join CHLP along with four advocates from Oklahoma, Louisiana, Georgia, and Texas on Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day to discuss their experiences with introducing and/or defeating harmful legislation. 🥊 This panel will feature: Eric Paulk, ProGeorgia & Georgia HIV Justice Coalition Nicole McAfee, Freedom Oklahoma Marvin Anderson, LCCH Venita Ray, Black South Rising Kytara Epps as Moderator, CHLP Register at hivlawandpolicy.org/events
