2022 Fellow Darby Aono-Shek, supported by The Clorox Company, works with UnCommon Law to help older incarcerated people, many of whom are Black and Latinx, challenge their illegal parole denials. "I’m developing a comprehensive guide to filing habeas petitions without an attorney that will be available to people across California prisons. That way, more people can feel empowered to hold the parole board accountable, even if they can’t afford an attorney," Darby said. Read more about Darby's project on The Clorox Company blog.

At the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, 2022 Fellow Uruj Sheik uses model litigation and advocacy to challenge the coordinated assault on the right to vote in states like Alabama. That advocacy includes supporting legislation like the Alabama Voting Rights Act, which would allow automatic restoration of voting rights in some circumstances. “It’s certainly important to maintain clean voter rolls," Uruj said in an interview about the bill with the Alabama Reflector. "But Alabama can’t unlawfully purge lawfully registered voters."
