    The Financial Sense of Sustainability: Energsoft's Approach to Battery You can’t talk about sustainability without considering cost. Over my last two decades in the “clean tech” space, I’ve seen companies make the same mistake repeatedly: not relentlessly focusing on cost. The Cost-Driven Landscape of Clean Tech Outside of early adopting trailblazers and regulation, companies will only adopt new technologies if it makes financial sense. Regulation can be a double-edged sword—it drives adoption but often at the expense of quality to save on associated costs. For manufacturing, regulation often drives a shift to producing in lower-cost countries with little to no regulation. The Good News for Batteries: Now that we’ve hit economies of scale, we can move beyond early adopters and niche applications into the mainstream. For most commercial uses, it’s cheaper to operate a fleet of EVs with lower fuel costs and fewer parts to wear out.     The Immature State of the Battery Ecosystem: The battery ecosystem, despite its crucial role in powering the modern world, is shockingly immature. This immaturity is not merely a matter of technology or innovation but fundamentally about how we handle data. The way we collect, process, and standardize battery data is fraught with inefficiencies and inconsistencies that hinder progress and collaboration. Data Inefficiencies and Lack of Strategic Use: One of the most glaring issues in the battery industry is the inefficient and non-strategic use of data. Engineers and researchers often struggle with the fragmented nature of battery data, which is spread across different file types, data systems, and tracked fields. Even something as basic as time-series charge and discharge data is plagued by these inconsistencies. Consider this: different organizations, or even different departments within the same organization, may track and report the same measurement, such as internal resistance, but arrive at entirely different results. This discrepancy arises not only from varying mathematical approaches and assumptions but also from the use of different battery cyclers and data loggers. The Absence of Standardization: The absence of standardization is a significant bottleneck in battery development. Without common standards, engineers and scientists face difficulties in comparing results, sharing insights, and collaborating effectively. This lack of standards spans across fields and units, complicating everything from data collection to analysis. In larger collaborative efforts or programs aimed at scaling battery production, this problem becomes even more pronounced. Pilot production facilities around the world use different equipment, track materials and process steps inconsistently (or sometimes not at all), and apply varying standards for analysis. This fragmented approach creates barriers to innovation and slows down the overall pace of development. The Need for a Common Language: Recognizing these challenges, we started Energsoft with the mission to create a "universal translator" for the battery industry. Our platform aims to track and link essential battery data from materials through to operation, establishing a common language that the industry desperately needs. Using time-series data as an example, Energsoft harmonizes this data into a unified format. But we don't stop there.     China’s Batteries Are Now Cheap Enough to Power Huge Shifts !!! -> Prices for batteries in China are plummeting. Over the last year, the price for lithium iron phosphate, or LFP, battery cells in China has dropped 51% to an average of $53 per kilowatt-hour. The average global price of these batteries last year was $95/kWh. -> The factors driving prices lower : a) Raw-material prices, have fallen sharply over the last 18 months. b) Overcapacity, leading manufacturers to cut prices to maintain market share. -> Raw material costs, overcapacity and margin compression from manufacturers account for the bulk of what’s going on, but there’s also still significant technology and manufacturing process improvements happening. -> China’s battery champions CATL and BYD continue to invest heavily in R&D, automation and additional factories, and they’re launching new products at a frenetic pace. - Pack-level prices for the most-sold battery chemistries have been below the often-referenced $100/kWh benchmark in China since October 2023, and LFP pack prices are now at $75/kWh. At that price, EVs can be priced at or below combustion cars in most vehicle segments, marking a huge shift. - Almost two-thirds of EVs available in China are already cheaper than their internal combustion engine equivalents, and many cheaper electric models are planned for launch outside China in 2025 and 2026. Since 2015, Breakthrough Energy, the climate-investment firm founded by Gates, has lavished $2.2 billion on more than 160 startups and other initiatives, seeking both returns for investors and emissions reductions.     In unmanaged cell or battery pack test laboratories, the overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) can easily fall within the range of 30%. This indicates that one-third of the available channels are used to generate valuable data. Reasons for underuse may include personnel not being able to repopulate empty channels in time, errors, incomplete or inaccurate data, or incorrect tests scripts? In well-managed laboratories, the situation Is completely different. With a state-of the-art lab management software suite, OEE values of 90% and above are achievable. If Energsoft could advance maturity and software integrations across multiple systems with our 25+ connectors we could seamlessly work with hardware and software of any kind. The lab management software insures intelligent scheduling of all tasks and facilities KPI-driven lab performance monitoring. The ability to assign different roles, along with advanced energy and asset management. Is considered standard practice in modern labs. Integrating advanced data analysis capabilities into a laboratory management system can significantly enhance work efficiency. Modern AI solutions can assist in analyzing the big data streams generated by a test field. Energsoft could work with advanced features for Chat GPT analytics or custom build data clustering, or SOX predictions. In these ways, the detection of anomalies and root cause analysis can be automated and accelerated. Modern data analytics software enables process optimization. In the Energsoft AI-based modeling techniques we can help to reduce testing time for battery cell aging tests. This reduction can be substantial, typically ranging from 20-40%. Considering that cell aging tests typically span six to 12 months and that larger scrutinize thousands of cells simultaneously, the potential cost savings ate significant. After certain period of physical testing, certain cells age faster and already contain relevant information about the non-linier range of capacity degradation. With each test cycle, the model progressively comprehends the interconnections among cells in this crucial phase, enabling the software to predict the end-of-life behavior of slower aging cells. After about 60% of the test cycles, the prediction error decreases to a level where a model can accurately predict the remaining cycles, signaling the termination of physical testing. Depending on the data quality of the test cycles, 20% of the test time can be saved with a typical error rate of les than 1% RMESE (root mean square error). Off course, this is just one example of how modern AI-based data analytics software can help industry tech to gain test efficiency and ultimately save costs.     With the accelerating transition toward electrification. Energsoft is not only keeping pace but moving forward to become a leading force in global electric vehicle and other battery testing. Transitioning an organization, especially one with a long legacy of success in a particular area, is no easy task.     Co-funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), the Battery Pass consortium project aims to advance the implementation of the battery passport based on requirements of the EU Battery Regulation and beyond. Led by system change company Systemiq GmbH, the consortium comprises eleven partners and a broad network of associated and supporting organisations to draft content and technical standards for a digital battery passport, demonstrate them in a pilot application and assess its potential value. Technical guidance for battery passports would involve standards and protocols for collecting, storing, and sharing this data securely and efficiently.
