Toto Wolff has officially reached billionaire status. He owns 33% of the Mercedes Formula 1 team and acquired the equity stake at a significant discount. The team now has over 1,000 employees and brings in $450 million in annual revenue. Here's the fascinating story 👇 First, some context is important. Mercedes-Benz has a long history in motorsports. They competed in Grand Prix racing since the early 1900s and even won two Formula 1 World Drivers Championships in 1954 and 1955. But then they suddenly shut down the division. Mercedes withdrew from motorsports entirely after an accident at the 1955 Le Mans 24-Hour Race. Their car was launched into the air and flew off the track, killing 83 spectators, including their driver, and injuring 200 more. It's the worst accident in motor racing history. But Mercedes returned to F1 more than 40 years later, supplying engines to teams like Sauber, McLaren, and Brawn GP. This went on throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. And with F1 becoming increasingly popular, Mercedes officially reentered the sport in 2010. Mercedes purchased the Brawn GP Formula 1 team for $175 million. But things didn't go as planned. Mercedes didn't win a single race over the next three years and finished 5th in the 2012 standings. This is where Toto Wolff comes in. Toto Wolff was a former racing driver who became a successful venture capital investor. He acquired a 16% stake in the Williams F1 team and joined its Board of Directors. And everyone took notice after Williams won the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix, including Mercedes. Mercedes asked Toto Wolff to run their F1 team, but Toto declined because of his equity stake in Williams. So Mercedes sweetened the deal, offering him an unlimited budget and a 30% stake in the team at an "attractive valuation" of ~$30 million. Toto accepted, and the rest is history. F1's regulations changed in 2014, and Mercedes built a better power unit than the other teams. This kickstarted a decade of dominance. • 8 team championships • 7 driver championships But more importantly, it translated to financial success. The Mercedes F1 team has added 650 employees since 2013, and the team's annual revenue has more than doubled. Headcount 2013: 650 2022: 1,300 Revenue 2013: $196 million 2022: $450 million And it's not just Mercedes killing it — F1 is, too. Liberty Media purchased F1 for $8 billion in 2016, and the sport has exploded in popularity since. U.S. Viewership 2017: 538k 2022: 1.2 million F1 Market Cap 2016: $8 billion 2023: $16 billion This success has had a direct impact on team valuations. The Mercedes F1 team is now worth $2.7 billion — up from $170 million — and Toto Wolff owns 33% of the team. That means his $30 million equity stake is now worth $900 million — and that's without counting his $20M+ annual salary and other investments. Now that's incredible. P.S.
