What does it mean to respect someone? The etymology of the word “respect" literally means “to look back.” Showing respect invites us to take a second look, like putting on a new pair of glasses. This helps us to see beyond initial judgments about people based on external impressions like clothing, skin color, physical or language differences. A second look also helps us look more deeply to see if people are smiling out of compliance but also showing subtle signs of distress or disagreement. Respect begins with empathy.
