We officially welcomed our newest residents to Casa Celina with a ribbon-cutting in the Bronx yesterday. We are proud to bring this development to life in partnership with JASA, Xenolith Partners, The Kretchmer Companies, NYC Department of Housing Preservation & Development, New York City Housing Development Corporation, and the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA). As the housing crisis persists, older adults are more in need of affordable housing than ever before. It was an incredible experience to meet Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor at the naming ceremony for Casa Celina, a brand new affordable senior building that ELH is co-developing in the Bronx. The project is named after Justice Sotomayor's mother, Celina, who raised her children in public housing after the death of her husband— a factory worker with a third-grade education. She bought the only set of encyclopedias in the neighborhood and held down two jobs so that her daughter could ultimately become a lawyer, and her son, Juan, a doctor. Justice Sotomayor's story is the story of affordable housing. A home is the first step in helping families climb the economic ladder and provide a better future for their children.
