    Early in his clinical career, Anthony Carter, LCSW-C, Director of Practice Improvement & Consulting for the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, had aspirations to advance into a management position.     As a veteran himself, Christopher Brown, LICSW, found a deep sense of purpose working as a VA therapist. But over time, the growing focus on productivity metrics — on top of increasing administrative demands — started to overshadow Chris's love for the job. “The expectation of time and numbers...they kept coming up with these crazy formulas for how to justify that we’re doing our jobs,” he shared. “I was working a lot. My Tuesdays were 11-hour days for seven years.” The pressure to keep up with endless paperwork and manage a caseload that sometimes reached 70 clients — many of whom needed weekly sessions — became so overwhelming that Chris eventually made the difficult decision to leave, shifting to private practice where he could reclaim the autonomy he had lost. Chris is just one of thousands of therapists who leave roles and settings where they are desperately needed — making an already critical shortage of mental health professionals even more dire.
