Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson was the first Black woman appointed to the United States Supreme Court. Justice Jackson’s appointment was not only historic but also necessary, as the National Lawyer Population Survey found that, “the percentage of African-American lawyers remained mostly stagnant for the past decade, accounting for only 5% of the legal profession.” Representation is crucial, even for Justice Jackson, who, from a young age admired law by following in the footsteps of her father and Constance Baker Motley, the first African-American woman to serve as a federal judge and argue a case before the Supreme Court. Interestingly, they share the same birthday. During her time as a federal public defender, Justice Jackson learned about, “the power of law to heal or hurt communities,” emphasizing the need for more Black lawyers, which is, “critical to building a justice system that serves all people,” according to Equal Justice Works CEO Verna Williams.
