Recently, Echodyne CTO and Founder Tom Driscoll was featured as a guest on the BBC World Service Tech Life podcast. BBC News Senior Technology Reporter Graham Fraser sat down with Tom and other innovators within the drone space to get a sense of how the industry is managing all the uncrewed aircraft that are entering the skies and the emerging use cases of drones. As industry continues to reimagine the airspace, filling it with everything from drone for delivery to air taxis to drones for public safety response (aka DFR), stakeholders have to figure out a way to manage the traffic proliferating the skies – both legal and illegal flying activity. On the Tech Life podcast, Tom talks about the criticality of radar for helping ensure that operators have the situational awareness necessary to safely navigate throughout the airspace. Tom further explains why radar is the “only real contender” in the world of sensors that requires detection of both cooperative and uncooperative air traffic. “Radars are mandatory in airports, they’re mandatory for conducting all airspace operations and as we think about a future where the airspace becomes significantly more populated, that role, that criticality of radar sensors, is only going to increase.” >>> Listen to the full episode of BBC Tech Life here (segment on drones begins at 11:03): https://lnkd.in/eidM-HZi #Drones #DroneDetection #AirspaceSafety #SituationalAwareness #Radar #DronesForGood

Radar Reinvented
About us
Echodyne designs and builds advanced radar solutions that unlock new capabilities for intelligent systems and autonomous machines and shatter price-performance barriers for sensor arrays. Our combination of patented metamaterials electronically scanned array (MESA®) technology with powerful software ultimately means significantly greater situational awareness that increases safety and saves lives. Our first radar is the size of a paperback book, weighs less than bowling pin, draws less power than a light bulb, yet outperforms every comparable radar on the market. We are just getting started. Echodyne delivers commercial radar solutions for end users and integrators in Government and Defense, Critical Infrastructure Protection, Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS), and Autonomous Vehicle markets globally. The company is based in Kirkland, Washington and backed by Bill Gates, NEA, Madrona Venture Group, Baillie Gifford, Vulcan Capital, Vanedge Capital, and Irongrey among others. In a recent piece in the Miami Herald from reporter Vinod sreeharsha, Echodyne’s ground-based radar technology was highlighted as part of Miami International Airport’s (MIA) new, groundbreaking perimeter intrusion detection system (PIDS). Together with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Miami Dade Aviation Dept, and other tech vendors, this new system integrates radar, LiDAR, video surveillance, and fiber optics to enhance security outside the terminal. As the first U.S. airport with this advanced multi-layered system, MIA now has a faster, more responsive capability to detect and deter intrusions, supporting one of the nation’s busiest international hubs. While drones enhance perimeter security, they also present a rising threat as criminals use them to smuggle contraband into prisons. In the article, "Drones: Both an Emerging Threat and Asset for Correctional Facilities," published in Corrections Today, an American Correctional Association magazine, experts Joel Anderson and David Lewin stress the need for radar and multi-layered defenses to counter both conventional and "dark" drones.
