You can have the best team members, but do they know how to work together as a team? Friction and disagreements erupt when egos get involved. Miscommunication and misalignment will derail even the best performers and best-performing teams. Team performance declines, especially when the team is misaligned on the goal. If you allow these problems to persist, they inevitably create a toxic culture with a lack of trust and respect. This can infect the whole team and lead to mission failure.  If you want a highly effective team, then you must train your leaders.

Trust must be built in order to develop strong relationships. Here are a couple of tactics to establish more trust with your coworkers: 1. Have open and honest conversations. Listen intently, and ask earnest questions to understand their perspective. 2. Overcome stressful problems together. Even if it’s chaotic at the moment, you can build trust by demonstrating that you are a reliable partner. 3. Work through emergencies together. Later on, you can look back at the other person and be proud of what you overcame together. Trust isn’t blindly given. It must be earned.

It was an absolute honor to have Debbie and Eric Job on Podcast 453 to share memories, lessons, and stories from their son Ryan Job. They raised a Warrior. Ryan “Biggles” Job was a machine gunner in Charlie Platoon, Task Unit Bruiser, SEAL Team Three. He was one of the toughest Frogmen ever. He had the best attitude at all times. He took care of his brothers. He sacrificed everything for us. He will always be one of my heroes. We will never forget him.

“What is your biggest weakness?”   This is a classic interview question, commonly answered with: “I can be a bit emotional, but it’s only because I care so much about the work that I do.”   Interviewees often prepare for this question by thinking about how they'll turn their weaknesses into their strengths.   But instead of trying to mask our weaknesses, this question is an opportunity to take ownership. An honest self-assessment will identify actual weaknesses — our tendencies — so we can leverage the opportunity to work on them.   Working to overcome our weaknesses is one of our greatest strengths. It starts with being honest with ourselves, first and foremost.    When we conduct an interview at Echelon Front, I’d much rather hear:   “I sometimes struggle to detach from my emotions before responding in highly charged situations. But I’m actively working on recognizing my red flags and being honest both with myself and my teammates when I may need to take a step back to get a better handle on the situation to make the right decision.”   Instead of telling me they are reactive because they care so much, they simply acknowledge their natural human tendency, recognize its detriment, and offer the plan to overcome it. I can see the real strength here.   Check out our free self-assessments on the Extreme Ownership Academy to gain insight into your tendencies, strengths, and weaknesses.
