NEWS IS BRAND SAFE AND EFFECTIVE - and we have collected 21 sources that prove this, and provide guidance to advertise responsibly and effectively on quality journalism. Following the inaugural 'Advertising: Who Cares?' event, I am happy to share the work of the 'Brands and Journalism' working group for all to use and dispel the false narrative of (hard) news being 'brand unsafe'. We should remember that the first example of contemporary advertising was an ad promoting an estate sale in the Boston News-Letter in 1704. Since then, for over 300 years, advertisers have benefited from the highly trusted and high-impact trusted news environments as they built their brands. Through good times and bad, news was never deemed 'unsafe'. Let's embrace common sense and facts, and use this highly effective medium to drive effectiveness - and as a bonus create a stronger democracy by holding power to account. In this compendium you will find 21 data points, research studies, and solutions that relate to this critical topic. Each box has a hyperlink, you may need to download the PDF to click these. The next step for our working group will be to work on an objective definition of 'quality journalism'. Thanks for all your contributions so far Hardeep Matharu, Matt Prohaska, Daniel Mogridge, Jamie Barnard, Brian Jacobs, Nick Manning. Containing materials from University of Oxford, Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, GroupM, DoubleVerify, IPA (Institute of Practitioners in Advertising), ThinkNewsBrands, Stagwell, MAGNA Global, The Walt Disney Company, Newsworks, Ebiquity plc, Scope3, IAB, Prohaska Consulting, Advertiser Perceptions, The Trade Desk, MediaCom, Internews, Brands4News.org, The Global Disinformation Index, Brand Safety Institute, NewsGuard and dentsu.
