The World Federation of Advertisers (WFA) is suspending operations of its Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM) initiative, launched in 2019 to protect brands from harmful content. This comes just days after Elon Musk's X filed a federal lawsuit, accusing GARM and its members of anti-competitive practices and organising an ad boycott. Our Ruben Schreurs called X’s lawsuit against the WFA an example of “weaponised litigation” that “simply serves as a vehicle to stifle those voices and cripple the organisations” that are trying to make the web safer, particularly for children, in a conversation with CNBC. X (formerly #Twitter) has filed a federal antitrust lawsuit against the Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM) and its members, including CVS Health, Mars, Orsted, and Unilever. The lawsuit alleges that GARM abused its influence to unfairly discriminate against X, leading to an #advertiser boycott.
