In adults 65 years and older, an adjuvanted flu vaccine -- which contains a substance that enhances the vaccine’s effectiveness -- given at the same time as a shingles vaccine had no additional side effects compared to a high-dose flu vaccine given with a shingles vaccine. A Duke Health-led study supports the option of providing the shingles vaccine and adjuvanted flu vaccine to older adults at the same time when both vaccines are needed. People 65 years and older and people with certain chronic diseases are at higher risk of severe flu complications. Everyone 6 months and older can help fight flu by getting vaccinated.
