On Wednesday, Sept. 11, Kodwo Ghartey-Tagoe kicked-off an incredible day of giving with a check presentation to Nourish Up. The $4,000 contribution will aid in the non-profit's fight against food insecurity in Mecklenburg County, NC. Shortly after the applause, smiles and handshakes, it was time to work. Nearly 150 blue-shirted employee volunteers quickly began clearing tables, sorting food items and forming mini bag-filling assembly lines to produce inclement weather packs. The packs, filled with shelf-stable food items, will be provided to 500 Nourish Up recipients, equipping them with meals for short-term emergencies. Once completed, employees penned letters of encouragement to families supported by Ronald McDonald House Charities, and Operation Gratitude ‘thank you’ notes to be mailed to veterans, first responders and active-duty military stationed around the world. This was one of several events held as part of Duke Energy’s internal Power of Giving campaign, where employees support the communities we serve through charitable giving and volunteerism.

On July 28, 68-year-old Magno Alvarez Ruiz wandered away from home. His family, who says Ruiz has dementia, quickly called 911 after realizing he was gone. Shortly after, the Spartanburg Police Department deployed 40 officers, search-and-rescue canines and drones to find the missing South Carolina man. A drone — purchased last year with support from a Duke Energy Foundation grant — was the first to spot Ruiz in a heavily wooded area about a mile from home. “The cameras, the zoom, the clarity…we were fortunate to get some of the best technology out there,” said Robbie Swofford of Spartanburg County Emergency Services. “This was huge for us.” Read the full story of the rescue effort that brought Magno Alvarez Ruiz home safely to his family. https://lnkd.in/gN2aEKU7

Hurricane #Debby left roughly 850,000 customers without power. More than 10,000 line and tree workers, damage assessors and support teams deployed across #Florida and the #Carolinas, and worked alongside power plant workers, grid operators and storm response teams to restore power for most customers within 24 hours. Working in tandem with strategically placed crews, smart technology, infrastructure investments and other grid strengthening measures helped save more than 500,000 hours of total outage time and automatically restored approximately 150,000 customer outages. “Our goal is always to be ready to respond when a storm strikes,” said Scott Batson, senior vice president and chief power grid officer at Duke Energy. “And the combination of our people, advanced technology and a storm response process that we work to improve after every storm helps us maintain that readiness to serve our customers effectively when they count on us most.” Learn more about the strategic investments and year-round preparations fueling Duke Energy’s response to severe weather: http://spr.ly/6047lg4Hh
