The evolution continues! Ukraine has unveiled a naval drone armed with anti-aircraft missiles. This advancement signifies a major leap in USV technology, integrating stand-off weapons into the battlespace. The ability to deploy anti-aircraft missiles from a USV not only enhances maritime security but also expands their strategic capabilities. This innovation showcases the continued evolution of USVs, highlighting their increasing versatility and importance in modern naval warfare. The integration of such advanced weaponry into USVs underscores a new era in unmanned naval operations, providing enhanced operational reach and effectiveness. What will the next step be? Incredible how quickly this field has evolved in such a short time! This is looking more more like a mod from Call of Duty!
Russian military is starting to utilize "Lyagushka" (Frog) small UGV that carries up to 30kg of explosives at up to 20km/h and a distance of 3-4km to destroy dugouts and fortifications. According to Russian state media, it is operated like an FPV, and soldiers made their own mods to antennas that direct the UGV.

The comments on this post from Dan Magy are interesting to read. Either you are for spending $$$$$ on weapons that "defend freedom" or you are against spending $$$$$ that is "wasted" by the US military. Is there a middle ground here? How about we pursue weapons systems that are more cost efficient? We have given free reign to the #primes in the defense contracting world, and they absolutely have zero incentive to reduce the cost of missile systems like the US Navy's SM-3 (ONLY $11M per missile in FY21...). Oh, but we need those missiles to defend against a multitude of threats. How many of these have we expended this fiscal year? Only by changing the procurement mechanism with United States Department of Defense will we be able to fix this problem. #primes have too much power here.
How much different weapon systems in the #usnavy cost to use.

This is an incredibly well-done infographic page highlighting the challenges and issues with Taiwan. This is a great primer for someone who would like to get deeper into this simmering issue, and why it is important to the US. https://lnkd.in/eKs6w8nA

This is just a glimpse into future combat!
Uncrewed - or at this point, remote-controlled - combat is here. Ukrainian FPV drones are destroying combat Russian UGVs in yesterdays battle in eastern Ukraine. https://t.me/brygada47/613

Interested to see how this can translate to the maritime environment, and what it will mean for C-USV, C-UAS, and C-UUV developments.
"8,000 cell phones on a 6ft pole all around Ukraine with a microphone next to them so they can hear the one-way UAV's..they tracked 84/84 and shot down 80 with AAA" - Gen James B Hecker, Commander US Air Forces, Europe The Ukraine doesn't have the budget of the US military, but it's teaching them a thing or two about resourcefulness, and we (Australia) should be paying attention. Forget about IEDs. Drones are the new equalizer, and they're far more accurate and can take out high-value assets deep in 'protected' territory. https://lnkd.in/gMXRP6vj

Excellent run down Nick Hatcher! Now lets get Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) to push more $$ down for R&D and get TRL 2-3 level projects funded!!
A few very initial highlights from the FY24 approps bill that was just unveiled: Roughly a $1B increase over the request (a cut in real terms); Notable $3B boost to Procurement and a $3.5B boost to R&D which was offset by a $2.9B cut to O&M and and a $2.6B cut to Personnel (Big indicator of Congressional priorities given inflation trends / was not expecting this); DIU wins big with over $800M in RDT&E compared to the roughly $100M request. DIU FY25 request looks to be back way down to $110M (will require continued support from Congress to maintain higher funding levels). While more R&D money to DIU is good, more Procurement money from the Servies to scale DIU prototyping efforts into mass production is even better (important to call out where these funding handoffs are taking place in the budget). Breakdown below of where those DIU adds went to (some really intriguing efforts in the hypersonic space): DEFENSE INNOVATION UNIT (DIU) ($225.2M) Program increase - defense innovation onramp hubs = $65M Program increase - defense innovation onramp hubs geographic expansion = $10M Program increase - industrial foreign influence analysis = $8M Program increase - innovation with academia = $15M Program increase - nuclear advanced propulsion and power = $2.5M Program increase - reusable hypersonic technology = $10M Program increase - hypersonic unmanned wingman = $10M DEFENSE INNOVATION UNIT (DIU) PROTOTYPING (131.8M) Program increase = $7M Program increase -accountability bookkeeping dashboard = $18M Program increase - additive manufacturing of undersea drones = $10M Program increase - advance rocket propulsion = $20M Program increase - aircraft autonomy = $14.7M Program increase - quantum = $55M Transfer from line 106 - operational energy capability improvement non-S&T = $7.1M DEFENSE INNOVATION UNIT (DIU) FIELDING ($589.4M) Program increase - Al development tools = $8M Program increase - Al for ISR data and analysis = $9.8M Program increase - Al for ISR drones = $10M Program increase - AUKUS and coalition warfare = $14.7M Program increase - autonomous amphibious response vehicle = $5m Program increase - automated cybersecurity testing = $2M Program increase - autonomous VTOL air logistics = $23M Program increase - CsUAS = $50M Program increase - digital engineering = $13M Program increase - DIU and service Non-traditional Innovation Fielding = $134M Enterprise Program increase - long endurance USVs for multi-domain awareness = $50M Program increase - modeling and simulation for autonomy = $4.9M Program increase - research on 5G interference with military radars = $10M Program increase - support to combatant commands = $220M Transfer from line 93 = $35M https://lnkd.in/e_Rq6FJk

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu ordered increased training and more weapons to repel Ukraine's attacks on the Black Sea Fleet. This includes the use of decoy vessels, increased large caliber weapons to be fitted to unspecified assets to augment their defenses. Training preparedness for daily anti-UAS and USV attacks are preparing crews to repel attacks both day and night. https://lnkd.in/eskPXXXe

Interesting development with C-UAS cages on Russian subs. This won't stop USVs, but could protect personnel from a UAS threat. The Russians are still working on their employment of maskirovka techniques to address the significant threat the Ukrainian USVs and UAS present to their Black Sea fleet. Will that reduce their losses? https://lnkd.in/ew3Vmw8J
