Our Cundall structural engineering team helped to create the TERHAL show by Dragone by providing services for the mother grid structure that supported the scenery, performers, and special effects from the roof of the performance building and the rehearsal venue. TERHAL show honoured and celebrated the rich culture of Saudi Arabia featuring acrobatics, stunts, aerial performance and special effects alongside traditional Saudi art and dance in a newly constructed theatre. Still from Terhal Diriyah, Saudi Arabia This still from Terhal is from the initial encounter between the protagonist, Saad, and the character named “The Dreamer.” While from the audience perspective, this moment might appear to be a duet, from a creative perspective it’s a trio of human performance. It is a three-way, real-time collaboration between rider, aerialist, and aerial winch operator. For the aerialist to effectively soar throughout the space, the winch operator responsible for raising and lowering them must understand every movement and deliver as consistent of a nightly performance as the artists onstage. Even with powerful tools and innovative technology, the onstage magic comes from the humans working together performing, operating equipment, and delivering a cohesive and dynamic ensemble experience for the audience with every show. Early visual exploration for “Robots in Love” concept Marker on paper Illustration by longtime collaborator Ben Cuvelier This type of quick and expressive illustration is often generated as one of the first steps in a creative process. Minimal and specific, it captures the spark of an idea that can be refined and expanded as the process continues. The idea evolves as more artists and collaborators contribute, shaping what was a spark into a realized moment of performance.  This archival drawing was created as one of 52 illustrations made by a team of artists. While the “Robots in Love” concept was never filly produced, it was very dear to Franco as a means of exploring the future through theatre. #makethemdream #illustration #process #dragone #concept #idea #sketch #dance

Photo from Terhal Diriyah, Saudi Arabia Production Designer Patrick Larsen (STUDIO BOUND CREATIVE PTE LTD) took on the massive size of the Terhal theatre by using shape and scale to his advantage. The sun pictured here is a great example of a bold form that reads from every seat in the theatre. Illustration, documentation photo, and detailed close-ups of sculpted hood for “Iguane” character from Le Rêve. With each phase of development, the details become more clear. In in the initial character illustration, the looseness of the hand-drawn lines and the limited coloring leave space for the mask maker and costume fabricators to add to the concept. Still from Terhal Diriyah, Saudi Arabia This is an image from a piece in the Terhal referred to as “Flying Page.” From a large book onstage, the protagonist, “Saad” extracts a gigantic piece of lightweight fabric as though it is an endless page streaming from the book. Saad, performed at this moment of the show by aerialist Alexandre Humbert, then flys into the air making huge, graceful passes through, around, and amidst the fabric ‘page’ as it is manipulated by four puppeteers and “the wind” character dances dynamically below.
