This past week, AHS welcomed back DGS alum and award winning podcast host, Kira Dineen, MS, LCGC, CG(ASCP)CM! Kira spoke to students in Professor Ordway's AH 3060 course, and to Allied Health students who attended the Career Discussion event hosted by the Department and DGS Professor, Angela LaRue. Students were able to discuss the field of genetics and possible careers. We value our AHS alumni who return to campus to inspire the next generation of allied health professionals!

Last week, Anna Cantor, Program Director of Genetics Education at the Center for Human Genetics and Genomics at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and co-director of the Genome Health Analysis (GHA) program, joined her Sarah Lawrence College GHA co-director, Claire Davis, on the DNA Today podcast. 🚨🎙️ New Podcast Series Alert! 🎙️🚨 We’re excited to announce the launch of a brand new series on DNA Today podcast: Mock Genetic Counseling Sessions. This new podcast series provides an inside look at what a typical session is like for various genetic counseling specialties. 🧬 Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we chose to start with a cancer session where an unaffected patient has a family history of breast and prostate cancer.🎗️ With shadowing opportunities limited and many existing resources outdated, we hope this series will be a valuable resource for aspiring genetic counselors, current students, and potential patients. It offers a helpful glimpse into the world of genetic counseling and a chance to understand what happens during a typical session. 🤓 Another fun aspect: Sarah Lawrence College genetic counseling students create the indication for the session, the patient’s personal and family health history, and play the role of the patient. SLC alumni play the genetic counselors. All sessions are recorded in person so we highly recommend watching the full length video! We’re thrilled that Catherine Mayo plays the genetic counselor in this session. Catherine is a Genomic Science Liaison at Ambry Genetics and previously held an in-person cancer genetic counselor position at a clinical breast center.
