Last week, Disability Rights DC released our third report in three years detailing our findings into very concerning incidents of abuse and neglect at PIW. On Tuesday, Staff Attorney Anya Kreider testified before the DC Council’s Committee on Recreation, Libraries and Youth Affairs regarding ongoing issues with the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services (DYRS). Anya shared Disability Rights DC (DRDC)’s concerns over DYRS’ unlawful use of restraints and seclusion at its facilities, which was outlined by a recent DRDC report (link in bio). This message from disability rights advocate Alice Wong is especially important as we enter DC’s primary election and prepare for the presidential election in the fall. Wong herself has done plenty of work in the voting arena. Along with activists Andrew Pulrang and Gregg Beratan, Wong started the #CripTheVote initiative, which used social media to center the disability community in conversations surrounding ongoing elections.
