Our latest Voting Access Report reveals that 72% of DC vote centers were inaccessible during the June 4 Primary Election. 10.67% were structurally inaccessible, and 70.67% faced operational barriers. Additionally, 14.54% of ballot drop boxes were inaccessible. These numbers show that voting in DC is still not accessible to everyone. We hope the District takes these findings seriously and makes significant improvements before the upcoming General Election on November 5. All voters deserve an equal opportunity to participate. Last week, Disability Rights DC released our third report in three years detailing our findings into very concerning incidents of abuse and neglect at PIW. DRDC found evidence of continued serious neglect leading to, among other things, patients being subjected to sexual assaults, physical assaults resulting in fractures and other serious injuries, staff neglect, and overreliance on seclusion and restraint. The report also discusses serious deficiencies cited in DC Health surveys, and investigation findings. The latest cover of The Economist was a cheap shot at mobility aid users. People with disabilities are not a punchline. Mobility aids such as the one pictured on the cover are not barriers that limit us. They are not a sign of weakness, but of strength.
