NoSo has an evidence based school program that young people love. No Social Media November is a youth-led social media detox program that uses a hands-on approach to helping students form a healthier tech/life balance through mindfulness, community building, and healthy coping mechanism adoption. If you are interested in bringing NoSo to your school this fall, we still have a few spots left to be a part of our flexible programming. It is clear that children’s mental health requires a concerted effort to minimize the harm that technology and social media can cause to their health and every day lives. In this JAACAP commentary led by Sahit Menon, we emphasize the importance of child psychiatrists developing the confidence and comfort to discuss healthy tech use with young people and their families to foster mental health. We also highlight the work of Design It For Us & California Partners Project as examples of youth-led and community-centered educational and advocacy initiatives tackling this issue. We are grateful to all authors, excited to amplify youth voices and appreciative of journals such as the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for supporting this work. I wanted to take a moment to amplify this petition by Design It For Us that urges Instagram to abandon the development and launch of their friend map. This map closely mirrors the Snap Map on Snapchat and would give way to even more harms from social media platforms. Children could unknowingly be sharing intimate locations (school, home, etc.) with predators online and I hate to think what could be the result of that. BREAKING NEWS! 🚨 The Senate has passed the Kids Online Safety and Privacy Act (#KOSPA), combining the Kids Online Safety Act (#KOSA) and the Children and Teens' Online Privacy Protection Act (#COPPA 2.0)! This marks a huge win for protecting kids online!

Today, we took part in the #KOSA press conference on Capitol Hill to urge Congress to ensure safer digital futures for our generation. As young people, we know digital platforms’ harms all too well. Now is the time to #PassKOSA. 

Yesterday, core team member Emma Lembke joined Healthy Online Platform for Everyone (HOPE) coalition's Rami Zwebti and GoodForMEdia's Audrey Wang at the White House as part of their Kids Online Health and Safety Task Force. Emma talked about her own experiences on social media, which led her down rabbit holes of pro-anorexic content. She and the other advocates are keenly aware of how Big Tech companies exploit our insecurities in order to keep us scrolling, all in their endless pursuit of profit. We're so grateful to President Biden for taking on the tech industry to ensure us kids and teens have safe and healthy online experiences, all while centering the voices of those harmed most.
