Amber Nicole Thurman’s death was preventable. A single mother and aspiring nurse, Amber sought routine care for complications following an abortion. Yet under Georgia’s restrictive abortion laws, her doctors delayed the critical procedure she needed. By the time they acted, it was too late. At Delfina, we exist to prevent tragedies like Amber’s. As a digital platform that delivers a deeply personalized and connected pregnancy care experience, our mission is to create a more equitable and accessible maternal care system. In the U.S., more than 80% of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable, with Black mothers dying at 2-3 times the rate of their white counterparts. Amber’s story is a tragic reminder of the urgent need for smarter, more supportive care, rooted in science, not fear. Our thoughts are with the Thurman family during this difficult time. Through Delfina’s insights, we can help improve health outcomes for all pregnant individuals, ensuring they receive the care they need — when they need it. Let’s work together to build a healthcare system that prioritizes the safety and well-being of all women. What an incredible few days at the Medicaid Health Plans of America (MHPA) Annual Conference! We had the pleasure of connecting with so many industry leaders and sharing Delfina's vision for transforming maternal health. Huge thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth to chat with us. Here are some key takeaways from our discussions: • The critical role of automating pregnancy risk assessments to ensure continuity of Medicaid coverage. Our solution helps integrate data across systems, optimizing maternal health management and improving care coordination, as seen in Ohio’s success with 60 CHCs. • The value of using personalized outreach to engage expectant mothers, reducing unnecessary NICU stays and saving health plans thousands of dollars per case through proactive risk identification and intervention. • The growing demand for equitable maternal health programs across Medicaid plans, especially in states like Kentucky and Indiana, where initiatives such as doula services and behavioral health are gaining momentum. Delfina is well-positioned to support these needs with our data-driven, personalized care platform. Already looking forward to next year! 💜 #MHPA2024

'Katie Harrington’s story is one of joy and heartbreak. Like so many women, she dreamt of becoming a mother. But after delivering her beautiful son, Katie’s life was tragically cut short due to complications that we still don’t fully understand: preeclampsia. A condition that affects 1 in 7 pregnancies in the U.S., it remains unpredictable and often strikes postpartum, when many think the danger has passed.' At Delfina, this is why we care so deeply. Every mother deserves to be seen, heard, and protected during every stage of her journey. I know firsthand how important this is. When I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes late in my pregnancy—despite no family history of diabetes—I was overwhelmed. I had so many questions about the long-term effects on my health and my baby's well-being, but I didn’t have the answers I needed. It’s experiences like mine, and stories like Katie’s, that drive our work at Delfina. We’re not just bringing technology to maternal care—we’re bringing understanding and empathy to every mother’s experience. Katie’s story reminds us there’s so much more we need to do to prevent outcomes like this. Our team is committed to ensuring no woman falls through the cracks—not during pregnancy, and certainly not after. This is personal. This is why we do what we do.
