Happy Labor Day!! 😀 Author | C. Knighten According to the U.S. Department of Labor, we have been celebrating Labor Day as an official holiday, since 1894. While there were several states that adopted Labor Day and recognized it for several years prior to Congress finally voting it in as an Official Federal Holiday! HISTORY OF LABOR DAY: Before it was a federal holiday, Labor Day was recognized by labor activists and individual states. After municipal ordinances were passed in 1885 and 1886, a movement developed to secure state legislation. New York was the first state to introduce a bill, but Oregon was the first to pass a law recognizing Labor Day, on February 21, 1887. During 1887, four more states – Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York – passed laws creating a Labor Day holiday. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday. Note that there exists some controversy over whom first suggested 'Labor Day' to recognize American Workers. STORY ONE: In September 1882, the Knights of Labor, one of the largest and most important American labor organizations at the time, held a public parade in New York City, featuring various labor organizations. They were aided by the fledgling Central Labor Union (CLU) of New York. Subsequently, CLU Secretary Matthew Maguire, proposed that a national Labor Day holiday be held on the first Monday of each September to mark their successful public demonstration. STORY TWO: Labor Day in September was proposed by Peter J. McGuire, a vice president of the American Federation of Labor. In spring 1882, McGuire reportedly proposed a “general holiday for the laboring classes” to the CLU, which would begin with a street parade of organized labor solidarity and end with a picnic fundraiser for local unions. McGuire suggested the first Monday in September as an ideal date for Labor Day because the weather is great at that time of year, and it falls between July 4th and Thanksgiving. Regardless of which story you believe....it is quite likely that there is some 'truth' to both sides of this....we still have them all to 'thank' for this wonderful holiday recognizing all American workers and their contributions to making our Country, cities and towns wonderful places to live and raise our families!! There are so many occupations that are a part of our city from the small business owners, to local restaurants, aerospace engineers, doctors🧑⚕️, lawyers, our police 👮force and fire🧑🚒 force should always be recognized. There are so many....it is too many to name here! With that, we encourage you, to mention someone, a local business, or member of our city that you are impressed with. HOTTEST Wednesday!! 🌞 STAYING COOL DURING THE DOG🐶DAYS OF SUMMER! Author | C. Knighten Across the U.S. temperatures are rising to above normal levels for this summer. 🌡 In fact, several states have had 'record breaking heat. You might surprised to learn that some of those states record breakers, were below our averages here in Alabama. NEW RECORDS SET: 🍇California: 118.94 🎲Nevada: 120.02 (a 3 degree jump) ⛰North Carolina: 105.98 in Morrisville and Raleigh with 106 🌲Washington State: Lewiston and Omak with 107, however, on a much lower scale, Bellingham and Olympia broke daily records, respectively, of 88 and 100......temperatures that we have become accustomed to in recent years. In fact, I, personally would welcome 88 degrees on any day in the near future! Next, we all know that 'life' goes on no matter the temperature, however, it is better to ere on the side of caution than to have a heat stroke or experience heat exhaustion! TIPS TO PREVENT HEAT EXHAUSTION OR STROKE: 🫗Stay Hydrated! Drink plenty of water and eat high water content foods, like watermelon. 🍉 👔Dress appropriately. Wear loose fitting , breathable clothing like cotton and linen! ⛱Find Shade. Or stay indoors. Limit strenuous activity. Take frequent breaks to hydrate and cool down. 👩🌾Plan activities appropriately! Schedule outdoor activities for early morning or evening, to avoid over exertion during the hottest part of the day! TAKE CARE OF YOUR PETS: 🐶 Before walking your dog on a sidewalk or concrete.....put your hand down on the sidewalk....if it is too hot to keep your hand their for 20 seconds....it is too hot your dogs paws! In fact, hot sidewalks/concrete can burn your dogs paws!! 🐶Keep them hydrated! Just like you, ensure that they have plenty of accessible water and ample shade if they are outdoors! **this applies to all outdoor animals! 🐶Offer them frozen treats! Frozen treats will help them cool down....just like you. 🐶Avoid strenuous exercise. If your dog is training or just playing fetch.....today is a good day to take a break or find an indoor facility with air conditioning! I'm just here to share interests of the day....and while there are a lot of holidays (over 150😳) that celebrate dogs....I personally feel that they are worth every single one!! I don't recall a cat ever saving a life.🤨.....there are no 'rescue cats'🧐 or cats serving in our military🪖....let alone a single one of them that attempts to herd cattle 🐂or sheep🐑! This day encourages ownership of all breeds, from purebreds to mutts and everything in between! HISTORY OF NATIONAL DOG DAY! The old quote, "a dog is mans' best friend' may not hold so true, when you realize that it was a woman who first promoted this day in 2004. We can credit Colleen Paige, a Pet and Life Style Expert, and obvious animal advocate for bringing our attention to the number of dogs living in shelters. The 26th, today, commemorates the day her family adopted her Sheltie, when she only 10. While many days aim to find loving homes🏘 for dogs, this day expands that consideration to look beyond the breed. Look into their eyes, and see their hearts and soul. The purpose of the National Dog Day Foundation is to rescue 10,000 dogs each year. Since 2004, when this day was first recognized, nearly 1 Million dogs have been rescued from shelters in the U.S. alone.🥰 While this day was first brought to the fore front in New York City, it is now celebrated worldwide🌎 with the purpose of helping dogs in shelters find their forever home! So, what's the hold-up?? They are looking for an entrepreneur with a minimum of $500,000 in liquid assets and ...no restaurant experience required! Their only true request, is that the interested party be on the same page and embrace their new focus. Originally founded in 1975, they currently have 95 restaurants located in 30 U.S. states and Canada. No doubt, with a plan to open 4 locations in Alabama, Huntsville, will one of their destinations. Personally, I know a few friends who not only loved 🥰dining there, but were, as we call in the airline industry.....frequent flyers!! The Melting Pot fused casual with a fine dining element that it a 'go to' place for the Rocket City! As we have grown to become the largest city in the state.......it seems like a no-brainer to me, to have them join the renovation in our downtown or perhaps a prime location in Mid-City. Surprisingly, carrots, tomatoes and cucumbers formed a 3-way tie while vying for the #1 Loved Vegetable in America! Frankly, I am in shock and awe.....yes, both.....that such a thing could happen. It is the first time in a long time that the potato has not ranked #1. While potatoes🥔 and broccoli 🥦tie for the number one most versatile vegetable, personally, I must admit that find potatoes more ap-pealing! 😂You can smash them, mash them, dice and slice them, bake or fry them, grate them, cover and smother them...the possibilities seem endless! There is a way to prepare them as a side dish for almost anything.....well, maybe not with pizza🧐? They are a great way to get iron, potassium and vitamin C. So how do you like your spuds?? Happy Monday!! 😀 IT'S IBM PC DAY!! 🖥 Author | C. Knighten Today we celebrate IBM on the date of the release of the first Personal Computer. Otherwise known as a PC, the Model 5150! Today, on August 12, 1981, IBM earned a special place on the World Calendar for delivering this innovative design that transformed the business world and everything in it! They set the standard for the first microcomputer in their model line, which still forms the basis for the IBM PC's to this day. Created in Boca Raton, FL, by a team of engineers and designers, led by Don Estridge. Their technological breakthrough has touched every industry all over the world! HISTORY OF IBM🖥 PC DAY: Technology plays such a vital role in our lives today, imagining what it was like prior to this age of modern computing.....well, it's much like using a rotary phone as compared to our Smart📱Phones! While there were minicomputers, IBM witnessed the rising profits of competitors in the microcomputer arena. Some of those competitors still exist today: Apple, Commodore, and Tandy. Interestingly enough, large companies such as Texas Instruments, Hewlett Packard, Data General, and some other big customers of IBM were starting to buy Apple computers as well. IBM decided to jump in and create an even more competitive edge by developing the first personal computer for both businesses and consumers alike! The first PC, the IBM Model 5150 debuted on August 12, 1981 and hit the market with a price of $1,565.00. The original model was loaded with 16k RAM, no disk drives and a Color Graphic Adapter. It was an overnight sensation that paved the way the era of personal computers! Working in collaboration with Microsoft to develop their operating system, established Microsoft’s dominance in the PC market. While there were earlier competitors, IBM's specifications and configuration set the standards for computer design. The only notable competition IBM faced in the 1980s was the Apple Macintosh.
