Today, Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC), Hoffman & Associates, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, and Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen celebrated the grand opening of The Westerly, AHC’s newest apartment building in the heart of the district’s Southwest neighborhood. The Westerly includes 449 apartment residences, ranging from studios to two bedrooms with dens, with 136 affordable residences. With a wide array of amenity spaces, retail, educational, and cultural options, The Westerly provides critically needed housing and expands community offerings for Southwest DC. The crowd also had the honor of hearing from Amber Johnson, a new resident of The Westerly. She lives in the community with her young son, whom she hopes to send to the AppleTree Early Learning Public Charter School, a pre-kindergarten education staple located at The Westerly. I am thrilled to announce that the 1 Hawaii construction closing occurred today! A huge thank you to the incredible Wesley Housing development team: Scott Kline, Greg Lloyd, Chris Weir, and Nory Flores. Wesley found a new partner and friend in Scott! We cannot appreciate this whole team enough - their unwavering commitment and expertise was instrumental in achieving this success. Most importantly, a heartfelt thanks to the residents who selected Wesley through the Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act (TOPA), allowing us to own a little piece of Hawaii. We are so excited that 1 Hawaii will be a new four-story community, ideal for families or individuals. The original building offered only 34 units, from studio to two-bedroom floorplans, within a two-story building. With this full redevelopment, we will more than double the homes to 70 units in this increasingly redeveloped neighborhood, and include a mix of studios to three-bedroom units! We are delighted to work with James G. DHCD will also release surveys to assist stakeholders in assessing the needs in their community.   Residents and stakeholders are strongly encouraged to come out and participate in the development of policies and programs in the following areas: 1) affordable housing; 2) special needs housing; 3) homelessness; 4) homeownership; and 5) community development and public service activities.    In addition, to assist in identifying the spending priorities of federal entitlement funds, the hearing will also outline the use of funding for the Recovery Housing Program (RHP). The purpose of the RHP funds is to address the housing needs of persons experiencing substance use disorder.   Residents and stakeholders are strongly encouraged to come out and participate in the development of policies and programs for RHP and the following areas: 1) housing for persons experiencing substance use disorder and 2) housing for persons experiencing homelessness
