Happy Independence Day! Today, we celebrate the birth of our nation and the enduring spirit of freedom that defines America. On this day, 248 years ago, brave souls declared our independence, lighting the path to a future where liberty and justice prevail. While watching fireworks, enjoying a barbecue, or spending time with loved ones, please take a moment to remember the sacrifices made by those who fought for our freedom and reflect on the values that unite us all. Let us come together as an ‘ohana to honor our past, live in the present, and build a bright future for generations to come. #IndependenceDay #July4th #FourthofJuly #Freedom #America

Juneteenth, also called Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates June 19, and marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. In 1863, President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, but the new law was not widely enforced. More than two years later, in 1865, Union Army Major General Gordon Granger and his troops arrived in Texas. There he told the enslaved people of the Confederate state that they were now free, as the American Civil War was over and as a result, slavery in the United States was to end. The celebration of Juneteenth as a holiday began in Galveston, Texas, in the 1860s. On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed into law the “Juneteenth National Independence Day Act.” As a result, Juneteenth was officially designated a federal holiday. The Juneteenth flag, a symbol for the holiday, uses the red, white, and blue from the American Flag, with a bursting star prominently featured in the center. Running through the center of the flag horizontally is an arc meant to symbolize the new horizon of opportunity for black people. In honor of Juneteenth, we encourage you to learn more about its history and significance. https://lnkd.in/g4EX_uUD #Juneteenth #FreedomDay #EmancipationDay

As we move through June, we join the global community in celebrating Pride Month. We believe that diversity and inclusion are part of our core values that drive our success. Embracing diversity means fostering an environment where everyone in our ‘ohana feels valued and respected for who they are. Together, we can build a culture that celebrates our differences and ensures everyone feels they belong and are part of the ‘ohana. #Pride #PrideMonth #LGBT #Celebrate #Diversity #Inclusion #Equality #Inclusive #Belonging

Today is King Kamehameha I Day, a public holiday in Hawaiʻi honoring Kamehameha the Great (c. 1758-1819), who, in 1810, unified the Hawaiian islands and became Hawai‘i’s first king. King Kamehameha Day was first declared by Kamehameha V in 1871 to honor his grandfather, Kamehameha I. The first observance of the holiday happened in the following year. King Kamehameha I Day was one of the first holidays proclaimed by the Governor of Hawaiʻi and the Hawaiʻi State Legislature when Hawaiʻi achieved statehood in 1959. In 1883 a statue of King Kamehameha was dedicated in Honolulu by King David Kalākaua (this was a duplicate because the original statue was temporarily lost at sea but was recovered and is now located in North Kohala, island of Hawaiʻi). This statue is duplicated in Emancipation Hall at the Capitol Visitor Center in Washington, D.C., and in Hilo, Hawaiʻi. Today, Kamehameha statues across Hawai‘i will be decorated with lei to honor the king’s memory. The 2024 theme is “He Inoa No Kalaninui Kamehameha – Honor to Kamehameha the Great.” This special day is marked with elaborate events that reflect ancient Hawai‘i and respect the cultural traditions that Kamehameha defended. This past Friday, May 31, was the 50th Anniversary Gala of the University of Hawai‘i Foundation’s William S. Richardson School of Law. Our platinum sponsorship of this event was given in the name of the Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation (NHLC) to honor and recognize the NHLC's years of dedicated efforts to providing attorneys to address Native Hawaiian claims and issues and, more importantly, to provide a solid core of attorneys for Native Hawaiians.   The William S. Richardson School of Law is a collaborative, multicultural community preparing students for excellence in the practice of law and related careers that advance justice and the rule of law. They develop highly qualified, ethical professionals through excellence in teaching, scholarship, and public service. They embrace Hawai‘i’s diversity and values and recognize a special responsibility to our state and the Pacific region. Among the distinguished law school alumni are HNC Board Chair Allen K. Hoe (class of 1976), and Beadie Kanahele Dawson (class of 1981).   “I am grateful for C.J. Richardson’s vision and untiring efforts to fulfill a dream, which has provided generations of Hawaiʻi’s people with the opportunity to create a better future.” - Allen K. We’re excited to be a sponsor for the latest exhibition at the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum titled “Ka ‘Ula Wena: Oceanic Red,” and we were honored to attend the opening night festivities. The Bishop Museum describes this original exhibit as one that “celebrates the distinctly unique reds of Oceania and the redness of our connection.” This isn’t your typical showcase, as it’s an extraordinary and unprecedented celebration of oceanic arts, people, and culture, that delves deep into the rich tapestry of generational history. This exhibit is currently open to the public and runs through January 12, 2025. The National Memorial Day Concert is an American tradition that honors our country’s veterans, fallen service members, and military families. One of this year's featured stories honors 1st Lt. Nainoa K. Hoe, son of U.S. Army Veteran and Hawaiian Native Corporation Board Chair Allen K. Hoe. In 2005, Army 1st Lt. Hoe died in a sniper attack in Iraq at the age of 27. 1st Lt. Hoe served with the 3d Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington. “Each year on Memorial Day, I pause to remember the young men and women whose lives were cut short by saying their names and sharing their stories.” – Allen Hoe Hear Allen talk about his heroic son, how loss has inspired him, and his commitment to healing the wounds of war: https://lnkd.in/gpBUNebh   #MemorialDay #America #Veterans #GoldStarFamily #Army #Hawaii
