Friday’s Hawaiian Word of the Day Pono (POH-noh) Pono is a Hawaiian word that signifies balance, righteousness, responsibility, and harmony. It encourages individuals to live with integrity and to make morally right choices. While in Hawai‘i or another part of the world, take time to appreciate the natural beauty of your surroundings and strive to be pono in your interactions with the environment and the people around you. We’re proud to sponsor Hawaiʻi Public Radio’s Hawaiian Word of the Day which encourages awareness and use of the Hawaiian language, or ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, in everyday conversation. Tune in to HPR every weekday at 7:28 a.m. HT for the Word of the Day and visit our page every Friday as we highlight and celebrate ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi. #WordOfTheDay #Hawaiian #Hawaii #Language #Culture #Pono

DAWSON Day of Service is an annual event that aims to get our ‘ohana out to support the communities where we live and work. This year, we are feeding ‘ohana with more than a dozen events across the country, including food drives, packing food kits at pantries, serving meals at shelters, and more. Kicking it off was our Denver team, who volunteered at the Food Bank of the Rockies, where pallets were filled with orders going out to families and organizations in need. They packed 103 pallets, or 86,954 pounds of food, which equals more than 70,200 individual meals. The Food Bank of the Rockies is the largest hunger relief organization in the Rocky Mountain region. Since 1978, it has used the power of community to help neighbors in need. Mahalo for all of the great work it does fighting hunger in Colorado. #DayofService #GivingBack #Volunteer #Hunger #FoodSecurity #Denver #Colorado #FoodBank

They rode. They picked. They pet. With help from DAWSON and the Little Drummer Girl Fund (a donor advised fund at Community Foundation of Greater Huntsville), yesterday we were able to host 111 individuals from foster, adoptive, and kinship homes at Lyon Family Farms! It was a day filled with fun, food, and fellowship - creating memories that will last a lifetime! We are so grateful to the donors and volunteers for making these moments possible.

September is Hawaiian History Month Hawai‘i is home to many historical sites that reflect its unique cultural heritage and diverse history. From ancient Polynesian temples to the royal grounds of King Kamehameha the Great, these landmarks offer a glimpse into the island’s indigenous traditions. Sites like Pearl Harbor honor pivotal moments in modern history, while plantation towns tell the story of Hawai‘i’s multicultural past. Sacred places such as Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park highlight ancient Hawaiian practices of law and sanctuary, while ʻIolani Palace showcases Hawai‘i’s royal legacy as the only U.S. state to have had a monarchy. Together, these sites represent the fusion of ancient and modern histories that have shaped Hawai‘i. Whether it’s on your next trip to Hawai‘i or a few moments online, take some time to learn about a few of the wahipana (sacred/special places) on the islands. #HawaiianHistoryMonth #Hawaii #Culture #History #BishopMuseum #IolaniPalace #PearlHarbor #IaoValley #PuukoholaHeiau

September is Hawaiian History Month. This month provides an opportunity to educate us all about the Hawaiian people's unique experiences and historical struggles. Acknowledging Hawaiian history fosters greater understanding and respect for the Indigenous culture of Hawai‘i. Let's take a historical look at the Kingdom of Hawai‘i, which was united in 1810 and existed until 1893, and two of its most notable rulers. In the 83 years it existed, eight monarchs ruled. Some succeeded via birth, others were named heir apparent, and others were elected. King Kamehameha I Kamehameha I, also known as Kamehameha the Great, was a warrior chief who founded the Kingdom of Hawai‘i, unifying the Hawaiian Islands. His birth name was Paiea, and his full give name is Kalani Paiʻea Wohi o Kaleikini Kealiʻikui Kamehameha o ʻIolani i Kaiwikapu kauʻi Ka Liholiho Kūnuiākea. His mother was Kekuiapoiwa, the daughter of a Kona chief, and his father, Keoua, was the chief of Kohala. Legends link his birth to storms and strange lights, activities thought by Hawaiians to herald the birth of a great chief. At the time of his birth, there were threats from warring clans and Kamehameha was taken away and hidden immediately. He spent his early years secluded in Waipio, returning to Kailua at the age of five. Kamehameha ruled from April 1810 until his death on May 14, 1819. He is most known for being a strong, confident, and highly skilled warrior and an intelligent leader who unified the Hawaiian Islands. Queen Lili’uokalani Lili’uokalani was the last monarch of Hawai‘i. She ascended to the throne after the death of her brother, King David Kalākaua. She is known for her work to restore power to the Hawaiian monarch and her people. In 1892, along with the Legislature of the Kingdom of Hawai‘i, she passed an act to protect public lands from privatization. This act declared existing trails, roads, and bridges, as well as future government-built ones, to be public highways. In 1893, Lili’uokalani was forced to abdicate the throne and was placed under house arrest. Despite her and Native Hawaiians’ resistance to the U.S. annexing Hawai‘i, she fiercely continued to advocate for Hawaiian sovereignty and cultural retention for the rest of her life. In 1909, she established a trust for Hawaiian children in need. Queen Lili’uokalani died on November 11, 1917, and was given a royal burial. Her life remains an inspiration to all Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians). #HawaiianHistoryMonth #Hawaii #Culture #History #Traditions #Kamehameha #Liliuokalan

We’re proud to sponsor Hawaiʻi Public Radio’s Hawaiian Word of the Day, which encourages awareness and use of the Hawaiian language, or ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, in everyday conversation.
